Surprising: The US Department of Defense and the military built some of the most complicated software systems in the 70s and 80s. In the 70s, these organizations probably had the most code to deal with - globally! - and things like distributed computing were pioneered thanks to these use cases. 2. The three axes of software architecture Grady argues that when talking about software architecture, we should look at these three dimensions: ceremony, risk and complexity. 3. The economics of software and software architecture are always connected Machine time was very expensive in the 1960s and 1970s, and software had to be written from scratch. Good architecture meant writing highly performant code to utilize these rather limited machines. However, these days, machine time has gotten very cheap, and there are also plenty of “building blocks” at our disposal: from frameworks to cloud services. Software architecture is frequently still connected with cost: to decide on what services and technologies to use, taking the cost aspect into account! People who say BYD is beating Tesla in China are most likely the same ones saying Samsung is beating Apple bc of market share. The reality is BYD sells more units largely by flooding the market with cheaper, lower margin cars. While Tesla sells fewer units, but they focus on higher quality vehicles, better software, global scalability, and profitability. Tesla still generates FAR more profit per vehicle, has world leading margins, and owns the full ecosystem from hardware, software, AI, charging, data, and manufacturing technology. Market share without profit is just volume for volume’s sake, and in my opinion, that’s not winning. This is the same story as Samsung vs Apple. Samsung often leads in unit shipments by selling tons of low and mid range phones. And Apple sells fewer phones, yet captures the majority of the entire industry’s profits. This is bc Apple has premium products and the ecosystem locks in customers with software dominance and customer & brand loyalty. Trust me, no serious investor thinks Samsung is beating Apple just bc it ships more phones. Even Elon called this out years ago saying scaling volume is much easier than building great products that people love, make real profits, and at scale. This is excruciatingly hard. So when someone tells me that BYD is beating Tesla bc of market share. What they’re really telling me is they are clueless on how businesses actually succeed. Tesla is the clear winner vs BYD.

The Cybercab is aiming to produce 2 million units per year. Let this sink in. Today, Tesla produces about ~1.7 million vehicles per year total, across its entire lineup. And now Tesla is preparing to outproduce that with one single vehicle, a fully autonomous one. This is Elon and Tesla going ALL-IN on autonomy. Production is scheduled to start April 2026 at Giga Texas, with volume ramping throughout the year. And as of early 2026, Cybercab prototypes are already being tested around the U.S. The Tesla Cybercab is built from the ground up for unsupervised autonomy. There is no steering wheel and no pedals, just cameras, AI, and Tesla’s custom inference computers. No lidar and radar like other companies, just pure vision and software. Elon put it best on the Q3 2024 earnings call: “It’s not just a revolutionary vehicle design, but a revolution in vehicle manufacturing that is also coming with the Cybercab.” That quote matters a lot bc that means the entire way a vehicle is manufactured is changing with the Cybercab. Tesla is designing what Elon calls “the machine that builds the machine.” The Cybercab uses Tesla’s unboxed manufacturing process, where major sections are built in parallel instead of one long assembly line. There are fewer parts, less steps & cost, and faster scale. That’s how you make 2 million Cybercabs per year possible. FYI, this is not going to be easy though. Elon has been brutally honest about production for many years: • “Prototypes are easy, production is hard.” • “The extreme difficulty of scaling production of new technology is poorly understood. It’s 1000% to 10,000% harder than making a few prototypes.” • “For cars, it’s maybe 100 times harder to design the manufacturing system than the car itself.” He reinforced this again in January 2026 when talking about Cybercab and Optimus on 𝕏: “Initial production is always very slow and follows an S-curve. The speed of the production ramp is inversely proportional to how many new parts and steps there are. For Cybercab and Optimus, almost everything is new, so the early production rate will be agonizingly slow - but eventually end up being insanely fast.” This is the key thing most people miss about Tesla manufacturing. Early output will be slow by design. Almost everything is new like the vehicle architecture, factory layout, AI hardware, and manufacturing flow. But once it works and clicks, it begins to scale hard. Tesla already proved they can do this. They survived Model 3 production hell. They turned Model Y into the BEST selling car in the world, of any kind. They ramped Cybertruck, which has over 30,000+ unique parts, to meaningful volume. Elon summed it up perfectly in 2024: “Compared to the insane pain of reaching high volume, positive margin production, prototypes are a piece of cake.” That’s why Tesla makes manufacturing look easy bc they already earned the scars from the last vehicle lineups. The Cybercab is aiming to be: 1/ Under $30,000 price 2/ ~$0.20 per mile operating cost 3/ 200+ mile range 4/ Up to 5x utilization vs personal cars 5/ Designed to run nearly nonstop 24/7 This is what you call manufacturing + AI + autonomy converging at scale. The competitors are still showing prototypes and demos, while Tesla is building new production lines, expanding factories, and actually building the product. I remember when Elon told me in the past that one of Tesla’s key advantage long term was going to be manufacturing technology. I get it now.

GOOD NEWS 🚨 DAN IVES PREDICTS TESLA WILL OWN '80%' OF ROBOTAXI MARKET — SAYS $TSLA IN HIS TOP 5 LIST FOR 2026 🆙 Ives is doubling down on Tesla as one of his top conviction picks for 2026, insisting that investors need to stop viewing it as a "car story" and start treating it as a robotics and AI play. He sees the stock fundamentally heading toward $1,000, with a current base case of $600 and a bull case of $800. According to Ives, this is a defining moment for Elon Musk—arguably his most important year ever—as the company fully commits to the AI path. Ford CEO Jim Farley on why it's so difficult for legacy car companies to get software right & why Tesla’s vertically integrated approach is the right one: “We farmed out all the modules that control the vehicles to our suppliers because we could bid them against each other, so Bosch would do the body control module, someone else would do the seat control module, someone else would do the engine control module. We have about 150 of these modules with semiconductors all through the car. The problem is the software are all written by you know 150 different companies and they don't talk to each other. So even though it says Ford on the front, I actually have to go to Bosch to get permission to change their seat Control software. So even if I had a high-speed modem in the vehicle and and I had the ability to write their software, it's actually their IP and I have 150, we call it the loose Confederation of software providers, 150 completely different software programming languages, you know all the structure of the software is different. It’s millions of code and we can't even understand it all. That's why at Ford we've decided in the second generation product to completely insource electric architecture. To do that you need to write all the software yourself, but just remember car companies have never written software like this, ever, so we're literally writing how the vehicle operates the software to operate the vehicle for the first time ever.” via Everything Electric Show:
