The 4th down play … ppl are discussing the wrong topic. The question is why did Allen get fooled with this Chiefs defensive alignment. 3 defenders into the boundary to “cover” 1 offensive option vs 4 for 4 to the field. 🚩🚩 should have gone up for boundary pressure.

I'd like to add one more point here. There's not an awesome answer for both 20 and 22 pressuring here. You're not sliding the entire line to the right. That would be a rare adjustment. You could ID 20 and then 22 is the only free runner and Allen can make him miss

I've watched this play like 20x, and Spags must've been outta his mind to design it. Another detail I just noticed: Spags used Chris Jones as a decoy. CJ is lined up on the right but the pressure comes from the left. You put your HoF DT on the opposite side of the blitz? Yikes!

Yet Allen still got off a pass that went right through the arms of his receiver. This is the play that got the Chiefs to the Super Bowl. If the receiver just does what he's getting paid millions to do - catch the ball - this same play represents a bad decision to blitz Allen & the reason the Chiefs lost. 20/20 hindsight is usually just outcome based opinion.

Great analysis. Big 95 CJ effect to a degree on the line slide? When not seeing the cues you pointed out, then slide to protect against him.

Duke had a clever Cover 4 answer built into this modified dash pass. The offensive line sells stretch to the boundary, which gets the linebackers flowing and helps the quarterback capture the edge. The defense is being forced to defend run action, quarterback movement, and a field-side bunch formation at the same time. Against condensed sets and bunch looks, defenses often like Cover 4 because it lets them play with clean rules to pass bunch crossers easily while keeping the roof protected. The issue is what happens when the single receiver crosses the formation and floods into the opposite side of the field. Cover 4 is built to distribute vertical threats, but it can get stressed when the receiver count changes late. The boundary safety is occupied by the new No. 3 vertical. The back releases to the flat, No. 2 becomes No. 3, and the safety has to carry that vertical threat. Now the backside corner is trying to chase the single receiver across the field with no real help waiting for him. That is the design. Move the quarterback. Sell stretch with the OL. Force the coverage to honor its rules. Then send the single receiver where the structure is least equipped to handle him. Good pass game design is not always about inventing something new. It is often about understanding what the defense is responsible for and putting stress on the one rule that does not have a clean answer.

2nd and 1 usually makes defenses think shot. Indiana takes advantage of that with Duo. The Bear front takes away gaps inside, but the shift creates space to the boundary. The boundary 3-tech gets doubled, the Mike is out to the field, and the safety is off the ball. When the safety helps deep, the bubble opens up. Big gain.

This is where the Texans lost the game IMO: 4th & 10 at the Chiefs’ 40, down 8 with 10 minutes left. DeMeco Ryans, typically a conservative, defensive-minded coach, surprisingly went hyper-aggressive by going for it. Instead of punting to pin an offense they’d mostly contained— majority of points came from a short field after a kick return, missed FG, and personal fouls—he went for it. The Chiefs hadn’t driven the length of the field all game but you go for 4th & long, snapping the ball as the play clock expired, giving the chiefs the ball on your own 44. Defense forces a 3 & out. Chiefs are faced in same scenario (4th & long on Texans 43), punt and pin us at the 7. 3 & out & they get the ball with great field position again, FG, game.

Core runs do not stay efficient by accident. If you want to live in outside zone, split zone, or any foundational run concept, the defense is eventually going to overplay the action. That is where compliments matter. Nakeds, boots, keepers, and movement throws punish defenders for chasing the run. But the next layer is the counter punch to the compliment. When the defense starts reacting to the naked, the quarterback cannot just run into the edge player or throw the obvious flat concept. He has to pull up while selling naked, let the run action pull down the boundary defenders, let the field defenders chase the tendencies, and replace the void with the deep cross. The boundary No. 1 keeping his route skinny as he occupies the corner in the deep third. That spacing creates the window for the deep cross runner working back across the field. That is offensive structure. Core run + Compliment + Counter punch = Efficiency. The best offenses do not just call plays. They build answers in sequence.

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko - Building Defensive IQ for Winning Situational Football "It starts to me with you have to develop football 101 in your defense. You've got to take a step back & you've got to build some level of general football knowledge in your defensive unit. It's sometimes the things that can save you when you don't call the perfect defense/scheme. Down & Distance Understanding... 2nd & 7+ - We have won 1st down... The offense is now trying to get themselves back in favorable positions for 3rd down. Here the battle is for half the yardage. - Offensively you will see a lot of RPOs, Quick Game, Screen & Draw. This is not a down where you will see a lot of high risk types of offensive plays. - Defensively we play this down & distance like a 3rd down off 1/2 the yardage... (2nd & 8 is like 3rd & 4, 2nd & 14 is like 3rd & 7) 2nd & 4-6 - We have lost 1st down. Now we must make a play on 2nd down to try to re-create an advantage for 3rd down. Success on this down is similar to 1st & 10. We are looking to hold them to 3 or less. - This is a down where the offense usually sticks to their strengths. Again, they are looking for a low risk play that will keep the chains moving forward. - For us we call this D&D no different than 1st down. 2nd & 1-3 (Waste) - Thus for the offense is known as a waste down. This is a D&D where the offense is likely to take a deep shot because they are in a favorable position for 3rd down. - Offenses will try double moves & max protection shot plays a lot on this D&D - For us on defense, this is a big zone pressure down. Gives us a chance to create a negative play and regain the advantage on the sticks. Also closes the middle of the field to protect us on the shot plays.

Why? ⚽️ Shorter distances on passes = Quicker ball speed = higher tempo ⚽️ Optimal conditions to utilise 2/3 player core moves/combos to create unbalance vs compact defences ⚽️ More compact offensive structures allow for better conditions to regain the ball quickly This example is based on situations using a 1-3-4-2-1 formation which is my preference for its natural central numerical structure against a 1-4-4-2 formation.

In recent years, China and India have maintained regular communication on boundary questions through mechanisms such as the Special Representatives (SR) and the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC). Currently, the border situation is generally stable and peaceful. The two countries should put the boundary question at an appropriate position in bilateral relations, not allow the boundary question to define the overall China-India relations, still less let specific differences affect bilateral cooperation.
