Have We Changed our Approach to Hamstring Injuries? 🎯 Five key points for clinical practice: 1⃣ - Strength and Flexibility are weak risk factors for hamstring injuries and continue to form a small but important part of the causal pathway. Although the evidence for stretching is lacking, multi-faceted prevention programmes might consider including these components to be successful in the prevention of hamstring injuries. 2⃣ - Intrinsic neuromuscular function may be altered post-injury. Clinicians should focus on returning the player to full function during the rehabilitation of hamstring injuries, which may include specific targeted intervention even after return to play. 3⃣ - Our common strength and flexibility tests have poor predictive value, and do not possess the characteristics needed to successfully identify individual players at greater risk of hamstring injury. This is evident in the large amount of variability between seasons, and poor sensitivity and specificity demonstrated for these measurements. The wide overlap in distribution of pre-season strength between injured and uninjured players demonstrates the difficulty in identifying a subgroup of at-risk players that might benefit from targeted intervention. It is therefore recommended that prevention programs be implemented for all players. 4⃣ - Workload monitoring provide another potential way in which we may reduce the risk of injury. The aggregation of chronic workload, as well as careful planning of acute workload increases, may reduce the risk of hamstring injury. I perform reverse hypers multiple times a week. On this machine, I like to get some momentum for the “traction” effect it has on my lower back. Do you do these? All gyms should have one but when they do, nobody ever uses it! Louie Simmons, the legendary strength coach and founder of Westside Barbell, created the Reverse Hyper machine to address back health and strength in his athletes. This innovative piece of equipment targets the posterior chain—lower back, glutes, and hamstrings—while also providing traction to the spine. Simmons designed it as a rehabilitation tool initially, aiming to alleviate lower back pain and strengthen the lumbar region in his own back. Why I use this machine: * Back Health: Performing reverse hyperextensions helps to strengthen the muscles of the lower back, reducing the risk of injury and promoting overall spinal health. * Glute Activation: The exercise specifically targets the glute muscles, aiding in their activation and development, which is crucial for improved performance in various activities like squatting, deadlifting, and sprinting. * Hamstring Strength: The movement also engages the hamstrings, contributing to their strength and stability, which is essential for athletic performance and injury prevention. * Improved Posture: Regularly incorporating reverse hyperextensions into your workout routine can help improve posture by strengthening the muscles that support the spine and pelvis. * Injury Prevention: Strengthening the posterior chain with the Reverse Hyper machine can help prevent common injuries, such as lower back strains and hamstring pulls, by creating a more resilient and balanced musculature. * Rehabilitation: When I tweaked my lower back, doing this multiple times a week aided my recovery greatly.

How I currently leg press to maximize hypertrophy 🤓 1. No quarter or half repping with tons of weight with your feet high up like a BITCH 2. Choose a weight you can take through a comfortable but reasonably deep range of motion 3. Move feet low enough to have deep but comfortable dorsiflexion (toe stretch to shin) 4. Execute a range of motion that stretches the quads but keeps the tension on them through the entire rep, for me this is when I feel light pressure between my calves and hamstring (I could technically let the weight squish me to such a point that my own hamstring and body are removing tension at the bottom 5. Lay hands on knees for a totally useless safety blanket (ok half serious I do think perceived stability neurologically increases large motor unit recruitment regardless of or in tangent with actual stability but this is just a working theory I have 6. Embrace pain feel sadge For Rep schemes personally I think (after warming up) a heavy first working set 5-10 reps 1-2 reps shy of failure to maximize large motor unit recruitment followed by 1-3 lighter sets within 1-3 reps of failure of 12-15 reps works best because lighter sets following a heavy first set seems to offset the fall-off in strength for the second set due to contrast overcompensation of the muscles (think about how after a heavy set the next set FEELS lighter and often you can take the second set FURTHER) it’s almost like having 2 first sets!
