The facility is among the first commercial AST SpaceMobile ground stations worldwide and is intended to support the rollout of direct-to-device satellite mobile services in New Zealand. Paul Goldsmith, Minister for Media and Communications and Minister for Space, opened the site as 2degrees marked a new stage in its satellite connectivity programme. The Marton station will connect with 2degrees' core network and support voice, data and messaging services for users outside existing mobile coverage. Engineers from 2degrees and AST SpaceMobile have been testing the system during August. The trials included voice calls, video calls and mobile data sessions using standard 4G and 5G handsets rather than dedicated satellite phones or extra hardware. 2degrees said it has invested millions in the local ground station. It also said calls, data and messages on the service are designed to originate and terminate on the 2degrees core network without passing through another country or jurisdiction. Mark Callander, Chief Executive, 2degrees, described the project as a response to persistent coverage gaps in New Zealand. "AST SpaceMobile approaches satellite connectivity in a unique way. The service is designed to offer voice calling, data and SMS, extending connectivity into places that have traditionally been difficult to serve. 2degrees has invested millions in building a ground station locally, providing access to advanced technology that will enable connectivity for Kiwis outside traditional coverage areas," said Mark Callander, Chief Executive, 2degrees. 2degrees has not given a launch date for customers. Further testing will continue before it confirms timings for trials and a commercial launch. Callander also linked the timing to the pace of AST SpaceMobile's satellite deployment. "AST SpaceMobile has a robust launch roadmap, and with each additional satellite deployed, service availability increases. We will offer the service commercially when service availability reaches a level we consider viable," said Callander. Global push AST SpaceMobile is building a direct-to-device satellite network through partnerships with mobile operators rather than standalone satellite handsets. It has agreements with more than 50 mobile network operators globally, including Verizon, AT&T and Rakuten, covering a combined subscriber base of nearly three billion. That operator-led model has become a key part of the emerging race to provide mobile coverage from space. Telecom groups are exploring satellite links as a way to extend service in remote and rural areas, where conventional mobile towers are harder to justify on cost grounds or face geographic constraints. New Zealand's terrain and dispersed population have made that challenge particularly acute in some parts of the country. For 2degrees, the Marton ground station provides domestic infrastructure as it seeks to add satellite links to its existing mobile network. 🚨🇷🇺 NATO'S NIGHTMARE: RUSSIA’S OWN STARLINK OPENS DAILY COMMUNICATION WINDOWS OVER UKRAINE Russia’s Rassvet low-orbit satellite network is now believed to provide around two hours of usable broadband coverage over Ukraine each day. The connection is not yet continuous, but Russia is building a sovereign communications channel that no foreign company can switch off. 🔸 Russian company Bureau 1440 launched the first 16 satellites of the operational constellation on March 23. The spacecraft were placed on an initial orbit before beginning their movement toward working altitude. 🔸 A second package was launched on July 19. Bureau 1440 did not publicly disclose its size, but orbital tracking identified another 16 satellites, bringing the likely total from the two 2026 launches to 32. 🔸 The current network is believed to offer around two hours of strong coverage over Ukraine per day. That is not enough for uninterrupted remote piloting, but it can support short bursts of high-speed communication. 🔸 During those windows, units could upload reconnaissance footage, receive new routes and target coordinates, synchronize battlefield maps and update missions before returning to autonomous or ground-based links. Combat use of Rassvet itself has not been officially confirmed. 🔸 The Russian-built satellites use 5G-based communications, inter-satellite laser links and plasma propulsion. Laser links allow information to move between satellites without relying on a ground station beneath every part of the route. 🔸 Predictable passes currently allow electronic-warfare systems to concentrate on limited periods. But every additional orbital group lengthens the available windows, and overlapping coverage would eventually force jammers to operate almost continuously. 🔸 Bureau 1440 plans to deploy more than 250 satellites for round-the-clock global coverage. Initial customer testing is scheduled for 2026, with commercial service targeted for 2027. Rassvet currently provides a scheduled link rather than continuous coverage. But every new batch moves Russia closer to a satellite network it controls from orbit to terminal — without depending on foreign permission or vulnerable ground relays. This is first time I've seen Amazon named by the CEO in the satcom context. CEO Fawad Maqbool was asked where AmpliTech sits in satellite, named Viasat, Amazon and CPI as ground-station customers and said they supply "pretty much all the high-end ones." To understand why this is so bullish, please read the quoted tweet where I broke down why I think Amazon will be significant customer for $AMPG in future. Amazon Leo/Kuiper needs a massive ground segment. Every antenna farm talking to those satellites needs the lowest possible noise figure on the front end, because everything is digital data now. Maqbool claims AmpliTech has the lowest noise figures in the industry. That is a pick-and-shovel position in the LEO buildout. You do not need to know which constellation wins. They all need ground stations. He also mentioned $SPCX: "Right now satellite is growing tremendously because LEOs are being launched, MEOs are being launched, SpaceX is launching, Amazon is launching satellites. All of these are going to require satellite terminals, high-speed terminals at Ku-band and Ka-band frequencies. We're in the thick of that. We're providing the most advanced, lowest-noise satellite communication terminal technology.
