🌐"THE NETWORK" by Afterimage The Network is an Afterimage software project targeted at our biggest recurring internal pain point: finding new high quality creatives to work with, across many styles and roles, very quickly, on a project basis. We work with startups on sprint timelines and often need to... find specialists (eg VFX artist, drone op, animators with specific style) quickly based on approved creative directions. And we’re always looking to expand our stable of core collaborators (DPs, editors, producers, directors). The talent pools exist, but it can be quite difficult + time intensive to source the right people. It's mainly a top of funnel problem. And nothing beats a trusted referral, but intros can’t always materialize in the order of hours or a day. This summer, karina joined Afterimage on Special Projects and pitched The Network to solve our problem. The product blends human curation with automation. Creatives only get added to The Network if they’ve made something our team has reviewed and explicitly “liked”. But the product is also smart and self-sustaining. New projects are surfaced, based on our existing database, for us to review at our leisure, leading to a intentional expansion of creatives on our radar over time. This careful balance between slow curation based on our own taste and smart automation based on those inputs is at the heart of the product. The Network can be searched colloquially in all the ways you’d hope and expect. Not going to lie: we’ve spent more time this year than I’d like to admit building internal tools that went nowhere / died in usage after the novelty wore off. The Network was different from the jump. People on our team were hacking their way into using it before Karina even officially pushed it “live”. Since having the product, we’ve hired people from The Network on every single project we’ve worked on. "please check the network for that" is now a constantly repeated internal phrase This is something we’d likely pay hundreds of dollars a month for if we needed to. The upside of finding the right creatives to work with on a given project can be worth thousands of dollars. And, if we stumble into someone we love who becomes an A+ collaborator of ours for years, that value is essentially unquantifiable. karina brought a level of initiative, creativity, and attention to detail on this project that inspired me. She is a star. Building a utility that reached such immediate intense internal PMF has been fun. More Afterimage software projects of different kinds will likely come later this year. We don’t have any immediately plans (aka the spare time or resources) to “productize” this in the near term. Russia has launched another brutal attack on our Kharkiv – on a construction hypermarket, on Saturday, right in the middle of the day. As of now, it is believed that more than 200 people were in the hypermarket. All the emergency services are already on the site and providing assistance, rescuing people, and extinguishing the fire that has completely engulfed the building – 10,000 square meters. There are killed and injured people. If Ukraine had sufficient air defense systems and modern combat aircraft, Russian strikes like this one would have been impossible. And that is why we appeal to all leaders, to all states: we need a significant enhancement of air defense and sufficient capabilities to destroy Russian terrorists. This is a task that must be accomplished and can only be accomplished together with the world. Every day, we call on the world to provide us with air defense and to save our people. Evan Spiegel on the lesson that killed his first startup and led to Snapchat: "We focused on building the perfect product for way too long before we got feedback. We worked for like eighteen months to build this perfect full-featured product, which was in direct contravention to how I was always taught to build things. Build a prototype, build an MVP, get it in front of people, learn as quickly as possible. But we had spent all this time building this perfect piece of software and we hadn't thought enough about distribution. While we built this great piece of software, our competitor at the time, Naviance, had secured distribution through all the different college counselors. What piece of software are you going to choose to help your kid get into college? The one recommended by the college counselors or the one from two kids at Stanford? I think it's a pretty easy choice. So we saw very early that we had no distribution advantage. Even if we loved our software, people weren't going to use it because we didn't have a scalable way to get it in people's hands. Around that time when we saw the emergence of the App Store on iPhone, it was very clear that was a distribution channel we could really use and benefit from. But we also needed to build things we could build quickly, things we really were going to use together with our friends so we could be the first early customers. Ultimately Peekaboo and Snapchat represented that." This is exactly the asymmetry Peter Thiel describes in Zero to One: superior distribution by itself can create a monopoly, even with no product differentiation. The converse is not true. Thiel puts an even finer point on it: most businesses get zero distribution channels to work. Poor sales rather than bad product is the most common cause of failure. If you can get just one distribution channel to work, you have a great business. Estée Lauder said: it's not enough to have the most wonderful product in the world. You must be able to sell it. Many founders over-index on product perfection and under-invest in distribution. It is worth trying to find a diplomatic solution, and this could be beneficial for both sides in the conflict. This would require interceptors, military convoys to escort vessels, a large integrated electronic warfare network, and other tools. We are ready to help with this. It's such an exciting time to be an artist on the internet. We now have the technology to build out our worlds, in spaces we own, it is truly the age of ideas. I've built a new home for my projects here, and in advance of my next major release with Transient Labs on June 16th, I want to share what I've made with you all, and open a dialogue about how we can use these tools as artists to enhance the experience of making and sharing our art. This is an overview of davekrugman dot com (link in thread), specifically about new sites for Drip Drop and DRIVE, and to that end, I'll give a work from each project to someone who reshares this post. If you are an artist who is curious on how to build a site for yourself, I would be happy to help, I'm an open book, ask me in the comments below. There are so many tools to use- I mostly used Claude / Anthropic- and now we can literally speak our ideas into reality , the possibilities feel truly infinite, if you have curiosity, patience, and a bit of time to explore a new frontier. For too long, artists have had to build on the rented space of social platforms, and now it feels like we can really create sovereign spaces that we own and make ours with our unique vision. No projects will be built in Canada until we increase red tape and taxes on our own industries and line up the pockets of First Nations 🤦🏼 Mark Carney: "For a pipeline to be built the industrial carbon tax has to be on this path to increase in Alberta. There has to the Pathways Project. There has to be methane... What this government has been absolutely clear is that it is full Indigenous participation in these major projects...but also ownership that we will help fund." The Liberals have created the stupidest conditions out there for our economy and how this is viewed as rational or acceptable is beyond me. Also, "WE" should not be funding a selected group of people no ownership of major projects. It's either ownership for all of Canada or nothing. Our prosperity shouldn't be based on First Nations hissy fits.

In light of the names Anneke Lucas mentioned, like the former Canadian prime minister who is dead now, but is the father of the current one. It is being shared all over the internet now. Canadian accounts are posting this, and it is getting lots of attention. This is also a wake-up call for Canada. A lot of people in Canada are commenting on social media that they are shocked by this guy being named. But actually he was already mentioned by Cathy O'Brien in 1995, as being involved in these networks! See the video below. So there is corroboration between these witnesses. A lot of these former and now deceased prime ministers she mentions were, at that time that she was in it in the 70s, involved in this. Also the Belgian one that Anneke names, and was also named by other witnesses. Which tells us, like these witnesses say, this was a global network. So the truth was already out there a bit, but it is coming out more for a bigger public. The future of design is… engineering. All designers at Vercel now also build, thanks to tools like v0, Claude Code, and Cursor. They've been contributing to our frontends and apps for a while now. But over the past few months, the leap they've made is engineering the design process itself by building agents. A big part of shipping is getting the word out in a compelling way, especially on the X platform, the everything app. In the past, we used to spend a bunch of time hand-crafting images and illustrations for social cards. Our design team built an internal agent and web ui using v0 and Claude Code that makes this process fully self-serve. It even includes a previewer of what the final artifact will look like on X. It's called Leap. It's probably saved us hundreds of hours of work but also massively raised our quality bar. The artifacts it produces are beautiful. If you had asked me even 12 months ago whether our design team would be building their own design tools, let alone be this good, I would call bs. There was no master plan, or God forbid, a "sprint" to make this happen. It just took a handful of prompts to build and it propagated on Slack. Leap is now one of the many agents that helps us run our company more smoothly, built and securely deployed on Vercel for our internal use.

We've been designing the robot that really looks at how humans work in the world. This world is designed around humans, and so I think having a robot that can do the things that humans can do can really start to take those menial tasks away and enrich in our lives, make our lives better we get to spend more time doing the things that we love. It's been incredibly fast paced, but the progress is, like, unbelievable in the short amount of time that the team has been working on it, and we've been growing the team and building the project the same time. I think we're breaking ground in this space everyday. The team is really energized and fired out. Elon Musk is incredibly involved in this. It's a great project to be a part of, and seeing where the future is gonna go and how it's going to enrich our lives is super exciting."

My goal in this budget process has always been to make sure we’re funding core, basic services in a balanced and disciplined manner. We know there is an inherent tension between asking people to pay rates, fees and taxes— and the issue of affordability. We want to make sure our city can provide the quality-of-life services that our residents deserve, but we also want to make sure we’re putting affordability first in our community. While I worry a lot about affordability, I also worry about the ability of our city to deliver quality services without more revenue. I strongly believe that if we're not making the kinds of investments we need to make in our people and our services, we will be managing decay in Austin in a very short period of time. This budget will not meet everyone’s concept of perfection. Truthfully, there are parts of the budget that I don’t like. That goes with living in a big, diverse city—different people will have different priorities, and we need to make room for all of us. Now, it is time for us to trust our voters. Voters have an opportunity in November to make a very important decision. From my perspective, the best part of this budget is that we fully fund our homeless strategy office. That was my greatest emphasis, and we've achieved it. It will make a world of difference in getting homeless people off the street in a very short period of time. I'm also very pleased with what we’ve added to funding for public safety, EMS, and wildfire prevention. A positive vote in the November tax rate election will allow us to pay for these needed services. And we make a significant investment in our parks. I look forward to a result that will be the best benefit of our community.

I think specifically in New York, there are adjustment periods. We've seen that time and again... My sense is our team has jelled pretty well. I think it was a focus in spring training. I think guys spent a lot of time together in spring training." Part of being a good team over a 6-7 month stretch is finding your identity through adversity. We're facing adversity right now certainly at an earlier stage than any of us expected or wanted, but this has an opportunity to be part of our story - help us find our identity, come through this and understand we have the ability to do that. Based on the guys we have and the quality of work and the quality of people, I believe we will be able to do that."

The value of the work we're doing at Optimum is encapsulated quite well by the phrase "speed is money". In modern markets there are real economic advantages to latency reduction. This is nothing new. Wall Street firms have long been optimizing on latency, primarily through colocation and top of the line hardware. However, when it comes to decentralized systems, expensive hardware and geographic concentration are antithetical to their purpose. Therefore we should optimize decentralized network latency through software, which I'm thrilled about because it's exactly what I've spent the better part of the past 2 decades working on with Random Linear Network Coding. Now let’s talk about networking economics, the relationship between speed and money. First, it's important to note that users will only pay for low latency if it can be consistently guaranteed. Second, you can only make that latency guarantee for a certain number of users. This is a universal law of networking. We can model this relationship on a delay curve, shown below. The delay curve is determined by the utilization rate of the network, meaning how much traffic is flowing through the network divided by the network's throughput. As you approach a level of traffic equal to the available throughput, latency trends infinitely higher. On this delay curve we can impose some utility thresholds. These thresholds are the levels of latency which are important to different groups of users because of how that latency guarantee improves their economic outcomes. Finding the point on the curve where each threshold intersects will tell us what level of traffic we can guarantee that level of latency for. Essentially, there exists a finite supply of speed on a network and the highest utility users of that speed are willing to pay more for it. I like to think of this similarly to expedited shipping options on Amazon. This is why we say speed is money, and why we can create a Latency Marketplace. The only way to increase the supply of speed is to fundamentally increase network throughput. This is what we work on at Optimum by using Random Linear Network Coding. The same relationship between traffic and throughput still applies, but now the delay curve is shifted out further to the right. Now more traffic can be processed at the same latency, or the same traffic can be processed at a lower latency. More speed available to the network. More value unlocked for the network’s users. Crucially, that value is no longer only reserved for those who can afford to sit closest to the machine. Expanding the supply of speed widens who can reach each latency threshold, keeping the network's advantage decentralized rather than concentrated in the hands of a few. When nodes join Optimum and participate, they reap the benefits, but they also add to the capacity. Rather than vying against each other in a zero-sum game, nodes help themselves and others.
