Thanks for the great terminal! The only issue I've really encountered with my Mac or Ubuntu is that on Ubuntu pressing "Ctrl+," or clicking "Open Configuration" from the menu does nothing.

Nice feature coming to Ghostty on macOS: keep window on top! Can be toggled via both the native menu bar, command palette, or bound to a key. This is a common macOS app feature (e.g. provided by Notes, Calculate, etc.). Feels right. 🥰 (For Linux/GTK users: this should be done at your WM/DE level instead of Ghostty which is more idiomatic. There doesn't seem to be a Wayland protocol for this and I didn't dare even look at the X11 atom nightmare fuel.)

just tried this with chromium, builds (with ccache) are still very throttled unlike the macos terminal. i've been trying to figure out why, but i still can't come to a conclusion left is ghostty and right is macos terminal, both get ccache hits

Ghostty 1.3 is going to have a preview of AppleScript support. All windows, tabs, splits, terminals are exposed via AppleScript. For macOS users, this satisfies some of the most common requests: broadcast commands, automatic layouts, jump to working directory, etc. PR here: I also think this is an incredibly important feature to ship early/now so agentic tools like Claude and Codex can take advantage of a scriptable Ghostty on macOS. I still plan on a generic cross-platform scripting/plugin API (two separate things), but integrating with native features like AppleScript is entirely in scope of the Ghostty mission and like our Shortcuts integration it importantly lets you connect multiple sources since AppleScript can control multiple applications from one script. Note I normally don't ship features so down to the wire with a release, but this one is very isolated in its impact and I'm going to explicit document it in the release notes and website as a preview since I fully expect we're going to iterate a lot on the objects and commands exposed. From a security perspective, Apple already prompts for permission to control different applications so we're covered, but there is a master kill switch you can put in the config, too.

Ghostty now has light/dark-mode specific themes and reacts live to your system theme changing. The titlebar also now matches the background color of the focused terminal, including runtime palette changes (i.e. OSC 11). See the video for examples (sound explains). The titlebar one is another example of one of those "details matter" features. We only modify the titlebar color if the focused terminal borders the top of the window. If its a a split that is nested below the top border, we match the previously focused terminal that touched the top border.

And people ask why you'd ever need a GPU-rendered terminal.... HAH! My yak has no more hair to shave. This demo is crazier than it seems: you can actually specify any custom shader, and the shader API is compatible with ShaderToy, so you can take any off-the-shelf shader from ShaderToy and this works. The tech behind this is super over the top. Ghostty is cross-platform and uses Metal directly on macOS and OpenGL on Linux. Metal and OpenGL use different shading languages. No problem! You specify the custom shader in GLSL (OpenGL language) and it’s automatically translated to SPIR-V (binary IR) then automatically translated to MSL (Metal language). That all happens at runtime because why not. Yeah but this has to kill your battery right? Nope! <1% CPU and <1% GPU because computers are fast (especially when you're working at a relatively low level).

It means you can fork to create virtual machines off of an existing one in less than 100ms, with all the processes cloned and running. smolvm is the first to have this feature + cross platform compatibility (macOS and linux natively). Here's a demo of a counter continuing on a forked clone while I only started it on the original!
