The situation in Al-Mahra Governorate is unclear. The southern forces that were previously based there have essentially pledged loyalty to the Southern Forces Command of the Southern Transitional Council المجلس الانتقالي الجنوبي (STC). At the same time, there has been an increased mobilization of the National Shield Forces قوات درع الوطن (NSF) in Al-Mahra. The first NSF wave took control of positions where Saudi forces had been active, including Nashton Port and Al-Ghaydah Airport. However today, the NSF started securing key government buildings. For the moment, the border posts with Oman in Sarfait and Shahan continue to fly the southern flag, and the borders remain open. It would not be surprising, however, if they were closed given the ongoing security turmoil. In short, the situation in Al-Mahra remains unresolved. It is still unclear which side will emerge as the dominant security and military force: the Saudi-backed National Shield Forces or the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council forces.

Despite the defeat and dissolution of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) after Saudi Arabia's 🇸🇦 offensive, South Yemen 🇾🇪 civilians continue to protest. The STC was the UAE 🇦🇪 backed militia that was controling part of South Yemen and launched a large offensive that nearly managed to merge the pro-saudi internationnaly recognized Yemen and the STC into a single state in late december 2025. Since Yemen is already cut between the north (Houthis rebels, shia muslim) and the south/east (STC, gov., sunni muslim), part of the southern population wanted to revive South Yemen/South Arabia state., which was already independant between 1967 and 1990. When the STC launched its offensive, it didn't face any large resistance and was welcomed by part of the population. However, the situation quickly reversed when Saudi Arabia and Yemen's army intervened and destroyed in a few days the dreams of independence of the pro-UAE STC. However, the population continues to widely protest in most of South Yemen's cities, calling for independence. For now, this is not the KSA's priority since it would prefer a unified state to two Yemeni states at its southern border. A pro-Iran and pro-Emirati state at its southern border would have been a nightmare for Riyadh...

Circulated videos shows the dismantling of a site that was intended to host the UAE’s annual Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival on the island. There are also reports that Emirati-linked business activities, particularly in the fisheries sector, as well as UAE-based travel agencies operating in Socotra, are closing down. These developments follow a decision by Yemen’s Saudi-backed, internationally recognized government to halt all direct maritime commercial shipping and airline traffic from the UAE to the island. To the best of my knowledge, there are currently no UAE military forces stationed on Socotra. The only foreign military presence on the island is a Saudi military task force operating alongside local forces. These local units have historically been aligned with the Southern Transitional Council المجلس الانتقالي الجنوبي العربي, but like other southern forces across South Yemen, they are now pledging loyalty to the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.

Only in Yemen - Splitting an airport 🤣 Next time hire a divorce lawyer, sorry I just can’t … okay back to being professional: The governorate of Al-Mahra saw difficult negotiations between Major General Fadl Baesh, commander of the Southern Special Forces under the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council المجلس الانتقالي الجنوبي, and Brigadier General Abdullah bin Sudeif al-Judhi, commander of the National Shield Forces (NSF) قوات درع الوطن backed by Saudi Arabia. Son of the former Sultan of Al-Mahra Abdullah bin Issa Al Afrar supervised the talks and helped the two sides reach a carefully balanced agreement after significant tension. The two parties agreed that the Special Forces would take responsibility for the western gate of al-Ghaydah Airport, including the outer and inner gates and the attached housing area. All other facilities and entrances at the airport would remain under the control of the NSF in al-Mahra.

Son of the former Sultan of Al-Mahra Abdullah bin Issa Al Afrar supervised the talks and helped the two sides reach a carefully balanced agreement after significant tension. The two parties agreed that the Special Forces would take responsibility for the western gate of al-Ghaydah Airport, including the outer and inner gates and the attached housing area. All other facilities and entrances at the airport would remain under the control of the NSF in al-Mahra.
