German MEP Petr Bystron raises serious questions about the narrative used to describe alleged Russian interference ahead of the European Parliament elections. He describes a Prague-based news operation that authorities alleged was being used as a vehicle for Russian influence across Europe. So Bystron says they looked at its actual reach. According to him, its English-language YouTube channel had just: 351 SUBSCRIBERS. And videos receiving, he says, an average of only: 4 OR 5 LIKES. Yet Europeans were being warned that an operation of this kind represented an attempt to manipulate elections across the European Union. Then Bystron makes the much bigger allegation. He says that during the political campaign surrounding these accusations, the conservative grouping he is discussing ultimately lost 27 seats. That does not by itself prove the campaign caused those losses. But it raises a question worth examining: WHO WAS ACTUALLY INFLUENCING THE ELECTION? A tiny media operation allegedly pushing Russian propaganda? Or the enormous political and media response generated around the allegation itself? If governments are going to invoke “foreign interference” during an election campaign, the evidential threshold should be exceptionally high. Because accusations of election interference can themselves influence voters. Ukraine needs further timely defense assistance - precisely the kind that can thwart Russia's revenge plan for this year - their offensive plan. The European Parliament’s position remains significant to ensure that all of our agreements in Europe regarding defense and shared strength are practically implemented. We need further principled political support both for Ukraine and for the entire project of a united Europe, which is the European Union. No European nation that shares and defends common European values should be left out of European unity. In Ukraine, we have met all of the necessary conditions for the adoption of the negotiating framework in June of this year, as previously agreed, and the actual start of Ukraine's EU accession talks. It is equally important for European unity to practically work for other nations that deserve to join the EU to also fulfil their candidate status. Balkan nations and Moldova are part of Europe, and I am also confident that there will be Europe Days for Georgia and Belarus. All of this is already reflected in the positions of the European Parliament, and it is really important that they are implemented.

I would hope that most people in this House are against a federal Europe. Otherwise, what is the point in standing as candidates at the next election only to come back here and propose to handover all your powers to represent your constituents to another parliament? We should not let those who support a federal Europe pretend that they are somehow more European than the rest of us. They're not. They're just more federal. There is nothing specifically European about a federal structure. Indeed, the opposite. It is the nation state which is European. [...] The true Europeans are those who base themselves on Europe's history and traditions rather than on constitutional blueprints.

During my conversation with Ted Kuntz and John Graff, an extraordinary claim emerged from Saskatchewan. They say authorities are building animal burial sites with the capacity to handle an enormous proportion of the province’s livestock. My immediate reaction: “Good God. Really?” Because if the scale they describe is accurate, there is an obvious question: What scenario are they preparing for? And this conversation goes much deeper. From the potential destruction of livestock and its consequences for farmers and food security, to concerns about whether political institutions can still be relied upon to protect the people they supposedly serve.
