A historic first for SpaceX as Starship splashes down in the Pacific after successfully reaching Earth's orbit for the first time. The spacecraft overcame an engine loss during ascent, reached orbit roughly 26 minutes after liftoff, and deployed 26 Starlink satellites before returning to Earth. SpaceX cut the mission shorter than its planned 10-hour flight, bringing Starship down after about three hours in orbit. Download the FOX News app to follow this developing story:

Elon Musk on how Starship turns mass to orbit from thousands of tons into millions SpaceX already delivers almost 90% of all Earth mass to orbit with Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy Most of the remaining mass comes from China, while the rest of the world, including the rest of the US, makes up only about 5% to 7% But Starship takes this to a completely different level Today, SpaceX is around 2,500 tonnes per year to orbit With Starship, the goal is millions of tonnes per year to orbit And SpaceX can reach 1 million tonnes to orbit per year in about three years That is not a small upgrade That is many orders of magnitude more mass to orbit than what exists today Falcon made SpaceX the dominant launch provider Starship turns orbit into industrial infrastructure

🚀SpaceX has successfully launched the largest rocket in the world This was the second launch attempt of the Starship V3 system with the Super Heavy booster. The rocket stands 124 meters tall and was designed for Moon and Mars missions. The test flight lasted about an hour — the heavy booster landed in the Gulf of Mexico, while the Starship spacecraft completed a partial orbit around Earth before making a planned splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

🚀 For 13 flights, Starship was intentionally kept on a suborbital path. Flight 14 changed that. On September 28, Ship 41 reached orbit for the first time, despite an early Raptor engine shutdown. SpaceX then used another engine burn to complete orbital insertion. At roughly 275 km above Earth, Starship deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites—its first operational payload in orbit. The flight ended early, but the milestone was enormous. Starship didn’t just reach space. It finally entered the orbital era. 🌍🔥

Starship graduated from test flight to something much bigger. Instead of a quick trip through space, this flight is designed to spend six orbits around Earth, deploy 26 Starlink V3 satellites, then deliberately deorbit, survive reentry, and splash down off Chile; while Super Heavy makes its own return toward Starbase. That’s the leap: real payloads, time in orbit, and a controlled trip home packed into one mission. Starship proves once again it can actually do the job. SpaceX / Writers: Val

One of Elon’s deepest speeches came at one of the most important moments in SpaceX history....worth watching this video again You can see how much this mission meant to Elon.....after 18 years of hard work, setbacks and nearly losing SpaceX The day SpaceX put humans into orbit for the first time Falcon 9 launched Crew Dragon Demo-2 with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley from Florida It was SpaceX’s first crewed mission and the first launch of astronauts to orbit from U.S. soil since the Space Shuttle retired in 2011 After years of failures, near-bankruptcy and people saying it couldn’t be done...SpaceX had finally carried humans to orbit And with that flight, Elon and SpaceX restored America’s ability to launch its own astronauts to orbit from U.S. soil A defining moment for Elon, SpaceX and the future of human spaceflight

BREAKING: Today's Starlink V3 batch will add 26 terabits of capacity to the Starlink network. That is about 10 times the capacity of a single Falcon 9 launch of V2 mini satellites. The Starlink team has made contact with all 26 satellites. Confirmed by SpaceX business analyst Tyler Lionquist and she explained more on the livestream: > The V3 satellites debuted on the last Starship flight and are built for Starship's payload capacity. > Today is the first time SpaceX will deploy V3 satellites into an operational orbit and add them to the constellation. > On the last flight, the first V3s flew a 20-minute in-space test to study their early life in flight. > All 20 made contact with the ground and the constellation by radio frequency and laser links. > Cameras and flashlights on the satellites captured views of Starship's heat shield to help refine a fully reusable design. > The team gathered data on array and antenna deployments, thruster firings and first network connections before reentry. Starlink is SpaceX's low-Earth orbit internet, bringing high-speed connectivity on Earth and in space. Source: SpaceX

ELON: I THINK THE FUTURE OF SPACEX IS REALLY GREAT On September 28, 2008, the day SpaceX reached orbit for the first time: “This is one of the greatest days of my life, and I think probably for most people here. We've shown people we can do it. This is just the first step in many. Ultimately, we're getting to Mars. I think the future of SpaceX is really great.” Source: Return To Space, Netflix, 2022

SpaceX Starship Flight 14 will be the first Starship into orbit, and the first to deploy operational Starlink V3 satellites. Flight 14 is going to include a lot of firsts: • First Starship flight intended to reach orbit. Flights 1–13 were deliberately suborbital. • First orbital insertion burn after stage separation. • First deployment of operational Starlink V3 satellites into the constellation • First in-space deorbit burn with a single Raptor, then a controlled reentry from orbital velocity. • First reuse of Starship heat-shield tiles (two tiles were removed from Ship 40 that was floating in the Indian ocean). These satellites that will deployed will actually be in service for SpaceX. Elon mentioned they would need approximately 1,000 V3 sats (sometime by Q2 2027), before it actually moves subscriber growth. 26/1,000! Elon also said this will be the final flight before SpaceX attempts to actually catch the ship with the tower on land, bearing in mind that everything goes well. September 22nd (hopefully) will be fun day.

Elon Musk: Starship 3 will cost less per flight than Falcon 1 but has 400 times the payload. “One of the most profound things is that Starship 3 will cost less per flight than Falcon 1. That's the difference between a fully reusable rocket or an expendable rocket. The fully reusable rocket with low-cost propellant and autogenous pressurization actually costs less than a tiny expendable rocket. Falcon 1 is about half a ton to orbit. The Starship 3 will be 400 times more payload for less than the cost of a Falcon 1. Ultimately, I think we might be able to get the cost per flight to Earth orbit down to around $2 or $3 million. These are unthinkable numbers. Nobody ever thought this was possible but we're not breaking any physics to achieve this.” SpaceX Update, April 4, 2024

NEWS: SpaceX has detailed Starmind, its plan for up to 1 million AI compute satellites in orbit, on a new website. Starmind moves AI data centers into space. Each satellite runs AI compute in orbit and beams results to Earth through Starlink lasers. The satellites draw constant solar power and cool for free in the vacuum. SpaceX filed that plan with the FCC in January. The first satellite, AI1, carries 150 kW of peak compute and spans 70 meters. Starship will carry 30 to 50 AI1 satellites per launch. SpaceX will build them at a new Gigasat factory in Bastrop, Texas. The AI chips come from a planned SpaceX and Tesla fab called Terafab. Two prototypes target early 2027, with thousands of satellites from late 2027.

I synced Starship Flight 1 and Flight 14 to the same SpaceX clock. The left side was April 20, 2023... the first time a fully integrated Starship ever left the ground. The goal that day was basically to just clear the tower. And it did. Then engines started dropping out. Starship never separated from the booster. The vehicle started tumbling, and SpaceX intentionally blew it up about 4 minutes after liftoff. The highest altitude reached was ~39 km that day. The right side was today September 28, 2026... flight 14 launching from Pad 2 at Starbase. When you pause both flights around the 4-minute mark. Flight 1 is basically gone. Flight 14 has already separated. And for the first time ever, Starship reached Earth orbit, about 275 km up. Then it also deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites... Starship’s FIRST operational payload delivery. I still remember after Flight 1, people looked at a wrecked pad and a rocket in pieces and said SpaceX was finished. Elon didn’t quit. The SpaceX team didn’t quit. This is what never giving up looks like... SpaceX is such an inspiration for all of humanity.

SPACEX JUST PUT STARSHIP INTO LOW EARTH ORBIT FROM TEXAS FOR THE FIRST TIME. One engine failed and cut the flight short, but that bird still deployed 26 satellites and made history anyway. Butch Wilmore said it plain: no low Earth orbit means no lunar lander path to the Moon. Artemis is aiming for boots on the Moon by 2028, and Mars is still the harder mountain behind that. While bureaucrats argue, Elon launches from American soil and moves the frontier. This is Texas. This is American aerospace. This is how you win the next century.
