Open-source magnetic tactile sensor for $5! 🧲 Researchers introduced a magnetic tactile sensor that's low-cost, and easy to fabricate, democratizing tactile sensing for robotics. Operating in unstructured environments like homes and offices requires robots to sense forces during physical interaction. The average Nigerian poultry farmer loses 15-20% of their birds. What if we could fight that with real-time monitoring? I am building a sensor that monitors environmental conditions inside the farmhouse. This is the hardware side to SmartFarmAI. It eventually feeds into ML models that help detect early signs of diseases like Newcastle before symptoms appear. The first step is blinking an LED. It doesn’t look like much yet, but this is the hello world of hardware and the foundation of precision agriculture for poultry farms in Nigeria.

Open-source dexterous hands with fingertip sensors! 🪬 ORCA Dexterity just released three dexterous hand models. Their mission: is to democratize robotic hand dexterity. They're sharing progress on exceptional, low-cost hardware and a software layer from low-level control to robotic hand learning. This is the open-source approach to dexterous manipulation. It has 83 taxels per finger with 0.1 N force detection which pretty is impressive for an open-source design. Tactile sensing is critical for dexterous manipulation, knowing contact forces enables gentle grasping, slip detection, and force-controlled assembly. Also 700g weight for the lite version makes it practical for mounting on robot arms without exceeding payload limits. Lower weight means faster movements and lower torque requirements. Trained on 460K+ tactile images using self-supervised learning. 2️⃣ Meta Digit 360 is a breakthrough artificial fingertip-based tactile sensor, equipped with 18+ sensing features to deliver detailed touch data with human-level precision and touch-sensing capabilities. 3️⃣ Meta Digit Plexus is a standardized platform for robotic sensor connections and interactions. This is a great time to learn #robotics! Robot AI has advanced to where a novice like myself can build / train this folding robot in my garage. The tech is not perfect, but it is improving *very quickly* (exciting new papers daily), and will likely be ubiquitous within 2-3 years. To learn more, great resources are: LeRobot Remi Cadene (open-source software), Alexander Koch , Rob Knight (open-source hardware), Chris Paxton, Stone Tao (news + papers). Also, 50 other grad students that I missed.

A few months ago we set out to understand exactly how our models can be used to accelerate progress in robotics and other AI systems that don’t just represent the world, but are actually able to interact with it. We’ve been collaborating with leading companies in the space and we’ve developed an initial approach that we're now opening up to accelerate development across the industry. Our fifth announcement is GWM Robotics. GWM Robotics is a learned simulator that generates synthetic data for scalable robot training and policy evaluation, removing the bottlenecks of physical hardware.

Ukraine has relied on low-cost, scalable weapons like the Blyskavka to overwhelm Russia’s air defenses and strike targets that were once out of reach. The mid-range strike drone, manufactured by Ukrainian defense firm Vyriy Industries for less than $1,000 per unit, is a reverse-engineered version of Russia’s own mid-range strike drone, the Molniya, that was modified to give pilots better control.
