The difference in the way Drew threw in HS/college and what we saw in the videos from the Steelers rookie camp is extremely subtle (basically a slight adjustment w/ the front leg and zero change to his upper half or arm path/slot) and most wouldn’t be able to pick up on it. I disagree that he was early with his external rotation during college. The video below (from 2024) shows his typical approach over the past 7 years…staying loaded and coiled on the back leg until the front foot makes contact with the ground. The drill is designed to keep him loaded in his back glute, and maintain the discipline to not fire his hips early, until his front foot gets down. His front foot and hip slightly clear (while staying coiled in the core) to allow the hips to come through cleanly. That slight opening of the front hip, along with the slight closure-internal rotation-of the front shoulder is how hip-shoulder separation is created. Getting the hips to come through first (while the shoulders and arms stay back), then the torso, then the shoulders, is how hip-shoulder separation (power) is maximized. Learned that from Chris Hess and it’s been a fantastic tool.

Think, hips are pointing forward towards your target while shoulders stay square (rubber band effect) . 3. Front side doesn’t fly open when turning. Keep the glove tucked. 4. 2 dry reps before throwing on the 3rd rep. For those of you who don’t sequence correctly or shot put the ball, try this one out.

The burning heat in your legs will beg you to stop, but the strength and growth you'll reap make it all worth it. 4 sets of 12 forward lunges, then 12 Reverse right away. Drop your hips until your hamstrings touch your calves, heels down, chest tall. Elevate your heels or hold a doorframe if you tip back. 2. World's Greatest Stretch x 5 reps per side Hits your hip flexors, hamstrings, T-spine, and glutes in one sequence. Step into a deep lunge, both hands inside your front foot, drop the inside elbow, then rotate that arm to the ceiling and follow it with your eyes. 3. Bar Hangs x 60-120 seconds Sitting compresses your spine and rounds your shoulders forward. Hanging is the only thing that reverses the load. 80% of pitching velocity comes from rotation. The biggest mistake I see is guys trying to rotate by pushing hard down the mound. They try to push to create as much linear momentum as possible. That’s actually the wrong way to approach it. When you push, it becomes much harder to rotate effectively. Rotation is where most of your pitching velocity comes from. Hip to shoulder separation is responsible for about 80 percent of your velocity. If you take away from that separation, you’re taking away from your velocity. That’s why even from your knees you should be able to throw about 80 percent of your top velocity. What we want to do is maximize rotation and create as much separation as possible. Your pelvis fires toward the target while the ribcage, shoulders, and pec stay back. That stretch creates torque through your torso. That torque is what propels the arm through the throw. One of my favorite ways to remedy this is to sit back until you feel the load in your glutes. This will create an “anchor” with your hips and from there you call pull your chest up and push with your legs to initiate the lift. If the hips are in the right spot, it will feel like the weight is going to “leverage” itself right off the ground due to the tension felt in the glutes at this time. The hip height on this is going to look different on everyone depending on individual leverages, but the sensation and overall function of the cue will be the same. At the start of a deadlift, we want our hips at the highest they can be with our shoulders in line with the bar. This cue will help to accomplish that! Stop Pushing With Your Back Leg As I trained to throw harder, I thought I needed to create a ton of momentum down the mound and really push off the rubber. That was actually holding me back from gaining pitching velocity for a couple reasons. The first reason was that pushing made it really hard for my pelvis to fire because it put me in a worse position instead of a better one. When I was pushing, it also made me fly open. The fix was thinking about keeping everything back and letting the pelvis rotate instead of pushing with my back leg. Most of your linear momentum comes from the drift and the drop in your delivery and the back leg. The back leg does have a role in building linear momentum, but its more important role is putting you in a good position to rotate. To create separation between your pelvis and your rib cage. That separation is what gives you true hip to shoulder separation that you can actually fire from.

The single-leg RDL is a seriously underrated exercise for single-leg strength, hamstring resilience, and real hip stability. But it also humbles you. If your balance falls apart the moment you send your hips back, the issue is not balance. It means your glutes and hamstrings aren't controlling the hip, so your body goes looking for stability everywhere else. That’s why you wobble. Focus on these: - Tripod foot. Weight spread across big toe, little toe, and heel. Steady base, steady everything above it. - Slight, fixed knee bend. A small bend in the standing knee, held the whole rep. Hinge, not squat. - Straight rear leg. Keep it long and in line with your torso so it moves as one with you. - Level pelvis. Both hip bones facing the floor. Let it rotate open and your glute medius quits. Drive the hip straight back, feel the hamstring lengthen and take the load, then stand tall. If you get that right, the balance will be sorted.

I've never met somebody with pain or posture problems who could easily lift a weight above the ear. 🎯Twice a week Form: - One leg is forward, the same side as the arm holding the weight. - Keep your back straight by pushing your hips back and arching your back. - Hold your working arm at 90 degrees relative to your torso. - Slide your shoulder blade toward your spine. - Lift your arm above your ear. - Lower back to the 90-degree position, and repeat.
