Today, I’m proud to introduce the Compassionate Intervention Act - a bold and life-saving step forward in helping those suffering from severe addiction. We can’t allow those in the spiral of addiction to end their lives on our streets because we are too politically correct to intervene. If addiction has caused someone to become a real threat to themselves or others, they need intervention and mandatory treatment. For far too long, people have been left to suffer in cycles of addiction, harming themselves and those around them. We are changing that. Recovering addict here, and I genuinely can't stop laughing at Pierre Poilievre pretending he understands addiction and recovery. By this logic, basically every recovery service in Canada is “garbage” because people relapse. Newsflash: relapse happens in addiction recovery. Treatment isn't a magic wand. And the idea that treatment centres will follow people around after rehab, drug test them, and then have their future government funding determined by whether former patients remain drug-free? LMAO 🤣🤣🤣 THAT'S NOT HOW RECOVERY WORKS. And where exactly are these 50,000 treatment beds coming from? Fairies? 🧚 Who's building them? Who's staffing them? Where are the doctors, nurses, counsellors, peer workers and support staff magically appearing from? Then he wants to defund supervised consumption sites the exact places that can keep someone alive when relapse happens. You can't claim to support recovery while defunding services that keep people alive long enough to reach it. I've heard some dumb things come out of Pierre's mouth on addiction, but this might be the dumbest.

It was incredibly powerful to hear Kimmie Jensen share her story of recovery, after jails, institutions, addiction, and life in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Kimmie’s story is inspirational. But it doesn’t have to be exceptional. Every day, people break free from the chains of addiction and suffering and rebuild their lives. We know recovery is possible. And we know that when we focus our resources on truly caring for people, helping them heal, providing real treatment, and creating pathways to recovery, lives can change. That’s what the October 17th Public Safety Plebiscite is ultimately about: restoring hope. Hope for people suffering from severe mental health and addiction disorders. Hope for their families. And hope for a city that knows we can do better. A clear mandate for real help. Real treatment. Real recovery. A clear mandate to multiply Kimmie’s story. Because compassion isn’t leaving people to suffer in addiction. Compassion is helping people get their lives back. On October 17th, your voice will be heard in the Public Safety Plebiscite.

San Francisco just recorded the lowest number of overdose deaths since we began tracking in 2020. One death is too many, but the progress we continue to make gives us hope. Since I took office, we have reformed our street outreach teams, invested in new treatment and recovery solutions including long acting medication, and stood up more than 600 shelter and treatment beds to get people the help they need. So far this year, overdose deaths are down 30% compared to last year, but the work is far from over, and we will continue to be relentless.

Under Tina Kotek’s leadership homelessness has increased by 35% statewide. Her outdated philosophy of housing first has resulted in billions spent on ineffective programs that fail to get people off our streets and into recovery and long-term sobriety. Edmonton is facing a serious opioid crisis, and community safety requires new, coordinated approaches. This summer, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) will open the Integrated Stabilization Centre (ISC), a secure, space where officers can bring people who are at immediate risk due to severe intoxication, substance use or a mental health crisis. With support from Recovery Alberta medical professionals, the ISC will offer 24/7 medical support and connections to voluntary recovery, health care, community and cultural supports. “The Edmonton Police Service is taking decisive action through the ISC to address addiction, overdose and social disorder with a coordinated approach to public safety,” says Deputy Chief Derek McIntyre. The ISC is designed to help divert people from the justice system where possible, reduce pressure on emergency services and provide care with dignity. The ISC is one more step toward a safer, more supportive response for people in crisis.
