Who remembers loading games from cassette? ... when I heard #ZXSpectrumNext could load from tape, I had to try it! and with screeching sounds, flashing borders and that awesome loading screen, JETPAC loaded just like it did in the 80s ... no "R Tape Loading error", for me ;)

I think most people would be surprised to hear that games used to run from cassette tapes. To be honest, I’m not from the generation that actually played games directly from cassette tapes either, so I can’t completely relate. But after recreating the experience with old hardware, I found myself thinking about how kids back then must have gathered around a computer, excitedly waiting for those long loading times to finally finish. It almost felt like I had traveled back to that era myself. Small games could take around 5–10 minutes to load, while larger games around 1MB could take nearly 30 minutes. Before trying cassette tape gaming myself, I had so many questions about how it actually worked. Does the tape keep spinning while the game is running? Do larger games require flipping to Side A or Side B? If you press the stop button, does the game stop too? I had a lot of questions like that, but the way it actually worked was that the computer first loaded all the data stored on the tape into memory. After that, the game would continue running independently without needing the tape anymore. Even now, I still find it fascinating and surprising. I can only imagine how incredible it must have felt for people experiencing it for the first time back in the 1980s.

The marine chatter, mixed with the ambient sounds and background noises, really set the stage for the intensity that followed. It felt like stepping into a real battlefield. That loading screen atmosphere was unique. I would love to see it return in the next #Battlefield game.

I had some downtime after work today, so I added preliminary support for loading Sega CD games from disk without dumping on SuperStation. It works very well! I’ll try Sega Saturn when I get a chance.

I've never been a huge fan of how most pitchers do rocker throws - with minimal loading & no rotation. ✅Try allowing the lead heel to free up, loading rotationally into the back hip. ✅Let the pelvis pop open from this loaded position and funnel that energy into a loose arm.

In the 80s there were SO many Commodore 64 games that half the time I had no idea what the hell I was supposed to be doing. Ocean’s 1985 The Transformers was the perfect example. I slapped in my copied tape (yeah… we all did it), waited through that beautiful loading screen, and suddenly I’m Optimus Prime… or maybe a random Autobot… or just a very lost truck? No manual. No instructions. Just pure chaos. I spent most of the game transforming back and forth like a confused robot having an identity crisis, while Decepticons hunted me down. Was I meant to shoot? Ram them? Or just look cool in vehicle mode? Who knows! The manual was still sitting in my mate’s bedroom in the next town. Why were so many Commodore 64 owners constantly in this dilemma? Because we were all running pirated copies. No manuals, no maps, no clue. Just a dodgy tape, a Quickshot or Competition Pro, maybe a TAC-2 joystick, and the hope that smashing fire and yanking the joystick in every direction would eventually work. More than meets the eye? Mate… I barely lasted 5 minutes.

my latest feat: GHWT console modding is finally REALLY real! the TU1 update does some weird stuff that prevents recompiled qb.pak files from loading properly i figured out the secret sauce (lots of hex editing) and got it loading patches i’ve wanted to do this for almost a year

"Classic NES Series Trivia" was a Flash game from Nintendo's site in 2004. The questions were loaded remotely, and could not be archived. Playing the game now results in no questions loading and a purgatory-like experience with blank choices, all of which are declared wrong.
