After Australia’s five-year hard border shutdown on immigration, we could consider a UAE-style approach to foreigners working in Australia. In the UAE, you can live, work, invest and contribute but citizenship isn’t handed out like a sample bag. It’s protected. It’s inherited. It’s born, not bureaucratically “earned.” Australia can do the same. No automatic pathway to citizenship. No “do five years and get a passport.” No mass naturalisation used as a political strategy. After the pause, residency might reopen but citizenship stays with only those born into the Australian story. It protects cultural cohesion. It stabilises the population. It stops the demographic churn that Canberra pretends is “economic growth.” If the UAE can unapologetically protect its national identity, Australia can too.
