Despite its proximity to Sui—home to one of Balochistan’s largest natural gas reserves—the region’s population of over 50,000 people is enduring a crippling shortage of drinking water. This devastating situation, worsened by extreme heat and chronic governmental neglect, has forced families to take to the streets in protest or abandon their ancestral homes in search of water. The continued failure of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) to provide a sustainable solution has placed tens of thousands of lives in immediate danger. This is not the result of a natural calamity—it is a man-made disaster caused by decades of state negligence. Despite being the electoral constituency of the current Chief Minister of Balochistan, Pir Koh remains parched and abandoned. Rather than prioritizing the urgent needs of his own community, the Chief Minister appears more concerned with advancing politicized narratives that vilify peaceful citizens. The people of Balochistan have long been denied their most basic rights. If they are not met with violence, they are left to die from thirst, medical neglect, or the breakdown of essential infrastructure. The water crisis in Pir Koh is not an isolated tragedy—it is part of a broader pattern of systemic discrimination and deliberate underdevelopment by the state. We urgently call on the United Nations, UNICEF, Amnesty International, and all relevant international humanitarian organizations to take immediate action in response to this man-made water crisis in Dera Bugti. The people of Pir Koh—and all of Balochistan—deserve access to water, dignity, and protection. The international community must not remain silent. ⚡️🇵🇸JUST IN: Government Media Office in Gaza: The number of deaths due to extreme cold in forced displacement camps has risen to 21 martyrs since the start of the genocide, and we warn of catastrophic repercussions of the upcoming low-pressure systems. We warn of the catastrophic humanitarian repercussions resulting from the waves of extreme cold hitting the Gaza Strip, in light of the continued genocide and the suffocating siege, and the widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure it has left behind, as well as the forced displacement of more than one and a half million Palestinians to displacement camps that lack the minimum requirements for human life. According to documented field data, the number of deaths as a result of extreme cold since the beginning of the genocide until today, Sunday, January 11, 2026, has risen to 21 martyrs, all of whom were displaced persons from forced shelter camps, including 18 children, in a dangerous indicator of the scale of the humanitarian disaster threatening the lives of the most vulnerable groups. We also record that the number of deaths due to extreme cold since the beginning of the current winter season has reached 4 deaths, in light of the absence of heating means, the lack of safe shelter, the shortage of blankets and winter clothing, and the continued prevention of the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid. We strongly warn of the repercussions of the upcoming low-pressure system and subsequent weather systems, and the accompanying frost waves and extreme cold during the coming days, which portend an increase in the number of victims, especially among children, the sick, and the elderly, if this catastrophic humanitarian reality continues without urgent intervention. We hold the "israeli" occupation fully and directly responsible for these crimes and deadly outcomes, as they are an extension of the policies of slow killing, starvation, and displacement. We demand the international community, the United Nations, and humanitarian and human rights organizations to take immediate and urgent action to provide safe shelter centers, allow the entry of heating and relief supplies without restrictions, and save the remaining lives before it is too late. Human Rights Alert: Escalating Targeted Violence Against #Somaliland Civilians in Mogadishu #Somaliland Human Rights Defenders express grave concern over the escalating attacks targeting civilians originally from Somaliland—particularly members of the Isaaq community—residing in Mogadishu. In recent days, families of #Somaliland origin living in the capital have been assaulted inside their homes by armed groups wielding knives, axes, stones, and metal objects. These attacks appear organized and deliberate, aimed at inflicting harm on #Somaliland civilians solely on the basis of their identity. A videos recorded bystanders in Mogadishu, showing violent assaults against #Somaliland residents, has circulated widely on social media, further heightening fear among affected communities. This surge in violence began shortly after #Somaliland received international recognition, a development that has triggered inflammatory rhetoric from certain leaders within the Federal Government of #Somalia. Instead of promoting calm, these officials alongside some religious figures and segments of the Mogadishu public, have disseminated hate‑filled messages that dehumanize Somaliland civilians, justify violence against them, and frame them as legitimate targets for “jihad.” Such rhetoric has directly contributed to the mobilization of groups now committing communal attacks. #Somaliland Human Rights Defenders are deeply alarmed by this pattern of incitement and by the failure of federal authorities to protect vulnerable civilians. The deliberate spread of hate speech by influential figures constitutes a serious violation of international human‑rights norms and risks fueling further communal violence. This violence is part of a long and troubling pattern. In July 1998, fifty‑one #Somaliland‑origin businessmen, intellectuals, and university students were massacred at Jasiira Beach in Mogadishu by former Somali military officials linked to the family of Dictator Mohamed Siyad Barre. More recently, in February 2024, a Somaliland civil aviation official, Abdinasir Muse Dahable, was killed in his home in the Wadajir district of Mogadishu. According to medical investigation teams, his death resulted from torture. These incidents form part of a recurring wave of communal violence targeting Isaaq civilians in Mogadishu. We urgently call upon: - The United States and United Kingdom embassies, - United Nations offices in the Halane compound, and - The wider international community to publicly condemn the ongoing abuses and communal violence directed at Somaliland‑origin civilians in Mogadishu and across Somalia. We further urge international partners to press the Federal Government of Somalia to take immediate, concrete measures to restrain mobilized groups, prevent further attacks, and ensure the safety and protection of all civilians regardless of origin. Failure to act risks allowing this violence—sparked by political developments and inflamed by official rhetoric—to escalate into broader communal conflict. In light of the urgent protection needs of those affected, Somaliland Human Rights Defenders also call upon the Government of Somaliland to coordinate closely with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) to facilitate immediate assistance for victims of the Mogadishu communal violence. The majority of these civilians have expressed a clear willingness to relocate to Somaliland for safety. Effective collaboration with these humanitarian agencies is essential to ensure safe passage, emergency support, and dignified reception for all displaced #Somaliland‑origin families seeking protection. Dangerous Military Escalation and Systematic Attempts to Drag the Region into War Since dawn today, the areas of Deir Hafer, Maskanah, and Tishreen Dam have been witnessing continuous military escalation, amid an intense aggression carried out by Damascus factions, in parallel with escalating attacks by Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles ( Bayraktar) , which warns of increasing risks to the security of civilians and vital facilities in the region. During the early morning hours, Damascus government factions launched repeated attacks on the surroundings of Tishreen Dam, using suicide drones, artillery shells, and mortars. The number of attacks exceeded 12 strikes, which also targeted the villages of Al-Mahshiyah, Sheikh Hassan, and the villages of Qishlah. The shelling is still ongoing around the dam at the time of preparing this report. The Damascus factions also escalated their targeting of infrastructure and service facilities in the town of Deir Hafer, where the Deir Hafer Post Office building was shelled using artillery and suicide drones without casualties, while the civilian Deir Hafer bakery was targeted by a suicide drone, leading to the disruption of service and a direct threat to the population’s food security. These attacks were accompanied by clear attempts to paralyze daily life by targeting any movement in the area, including preventing farmers from accessing their lands and work, which negatively affected the civilians’ living conditions. On the ground, our forces repelled an infiltration attempt carried out by Damascus government factions on the axis of the village of Zubaidah in the southern countryside of Deir Hafer city. The attempt failed, and the attackers were forced to flee, despite it being carried out under the cover of drones and the use of machine guns. In parallel, the area witnessed intensive flights of Turkish (Bayraktar) drones, where a ( Bayraktar) Turkish drone targeted a military point belonging to our forces in the city of Maskanah without casualties، this being the second strike on the same day. Another point was also targeted in the village of Al Bu‘asi in the countryside of Tabqah. The Turkish drones( Bayraktar) continued to target the city of Maskanah for the fourth time since the start of the escalation, a clear indication of the rising pace of aerial attacks in the region. This simultaneous escalation since dawn today comes amid the continuation of military operations up to the present moment, which heightens expectations of an expansion of the scope of confrontations and their serious repercussions on civilians, infrastructure, and vital facilities. The Damascus factions bear full responsibility for this escalation and the resulting humanitarian and security consequences in the region. SDF Media Centre January 14, 2026
