In the past 12 hours, Calgary has experienced 2 pedestrian fatalities in separate collisions. We are now on par with the 10-year high of fatal collisions in Calgary. So far in 2025, Calgary has seen over 300 collisions involving pedestrians, including 10 fatalities. October is Pedestrian Safety Month in Alberta’s Traffic Safety Calendar & we are urging Calgarians to exercise extra caution. Please stay alert, distraction-free & slow down. Road safety is a shared responsibility. We ask both motorists & pedestrians to look out for one another to help prevent further tragedies. Tips for drivers: 🔹 Make eye contact with pedestrians 🔹 Drive at a safe speed & stop for pedestrians at crosswalks 🔹 Never pass a vehicle at a crosswalk 🔹 Avoid distractions by keeping your eyes on the road & devices out of your hands Tips for pedestrians: 🔹 Use crosswalks & sidewalks 🔹 Look both ways before crossing the street 🔹 Follow traffic signs & signals 🔹 Avoid distractions & limit the use of earphones & devices when walking We remain committed to improving road safety for all Calgarians & continue working with The City of Calgary to advance the Safer Mobility Plan, guided by our shared goal of Vision Zero – mobility free of fatalities & serious injuries. 🌐 To learn more about the pedestrian fatality that occurred overnight, please visit: ℹ️ Details of this morning’s fatal collision will be released when they are available later today.

There's been more than 600 collisions reported to police since Monday morning & we're asking Calgarians to ensure they're driving according to the winter weather conditions. ❄🚗 Clearing your vehicle of snow, making sure vehicle lights are working & turned on, slowing down & travelling with an emergency kit in case you encounter car trouble are just a few easy but essential things that truly make a difference in everyone's safety, especially in frigid temperatures. If you do find yourself involved in a collision & require a tow, wait for first responders to arrive on scene before agreeing to have your vehicle towed. If vehicles are drivable & if it is safe to do so, move your vehicle off to the side of the road. ‼ For serious-injury collisions, call 911 immediately.

After a record year of 29 fatal traffic collisions in 2024, we’ve already had 3 fatal collisions so far in 2025 & we’re still in the first month of the New Year. People’s lives have been forever changed by these tragedies & it has to stop. This is an alarming trend that cannot continue. 🗣 2024 marked the highest number of fatal collisions since 2013, a continuation of a year-over-year increase in collisions since 2021. It was also the highest year for pedestrian fatalities since 2005. Having the right of way does not always mean it is safe to proceed. Whether in a marked crosswalk or driving through a green light, it is crucial for all road users to first establish that it is in fact safe to proceed. As the city’s population continues to grow, that means there are more vehicles & more people using Calgary roads. We all need to look out for one another when driving, walking, cycling or using other modes of transportation. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. We’re encouraging motorists to continue to drive safe all year round, no matter the weather or road conditions. We all deserve to make it home safe to our families every day. We’re reminding Calgarians to slow down & drive safe, no matter the weather or road conditions. 📍 Early this morning, our members responded to reports of a 16-year-old motorcyclist who was believed to be travelling at a speed of 200 km/hr in the 9500 block of Crowchild Trail N.W. The rider lost control when passing a vehicle on the shoulder, ultimately striking the vehicle before striking a bridge. Thankfully the injuries sustained by the rider were not life-threatening or life-altering. He was transported to hospital in serious condition. ⚠️ So far this year, there’s been a total of 14 fatal collisions on Calgary roads, including four pedestrian fatalities. Speed drastically increases the possibility of serious, life-altering, life-threatening injuries or death. 🗣️ Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. 🗣️ Growing Concern Over Youth Using Air Guns in Calgary 🗣️ In Calgary, air guns, including airsoft, pellet & BB guns are causing serious public safety concerns. Their realistic appearance can lead to dangerous incidents, life altering injuries, emergency police responses & criminal charges. Incidents involving air guns can escalate quickly & will result in a serious response from police officers, who must treat every potential threat to public safety as real. On average we are responding to at least one incident involving air guns everyday. Half of these incidents involve youth, who are often unaware of the risks and consequences. Recent incidents include youth shooting air guns at people & vehicles & using air guns in the commission of other offences including robberies, a carjacking, threats & intimidation. Let’s work together to keep our communities safe. Some important reminders relating to the use of air guns, include: 🚫 Discharging air guns in city limits is illegal. 🔒 Never carry air guns in public places, including parks, schools & malls. 🎯If youth are handling air guns for legitimate recreational purposes, their use should be supervised and in a controlled environment. 👨👩👧👦 Parents should talk to youth to educate them about safety risks & the potential consequences of carrying & using air guns. ☎️ Report unsafe use: 403-266-1234 or 911 in an emergency. 🌐 More info:
