Blessed with babies! Last night brought another wonderful addition... to our extended elephant family. Just days after Zongoloni gave birth to Zigi in Umani Springs, ex-orphan Lualeni introduced us to her newest arrival in Ithumba. This is Lualeni’s third calf — and her first boy — following in the footsteps of big sisters Lulu and Lexi. We have named him Luki. (Pictured here are Lualeni, Luki, and Lulu, while middle child Lexi is just out of frame.) As is a time honoured tradition among our ex-orphan mums, Lualeni made the journey home after giving birth, so she could share her new joy with the people who raised her. A very special mother - matriarch and grandmother -... just shared a very special announcement with us! Ex-orphan Yatta has delivered a baby girl! After giving birth yesterday morning, the proud mum made a detour to our Ithumba stockades — choosing to share her new arrival to the people who raised her. We named her daughter Yara, which means ‘small butterfly’ in Arabic. We rescued Yatta — her mother a victim of poaching — in 1999. She has been living wild for more than 15 years, yet continues to celebrate her biggest milestones with us. Yara is Yatta’s fourth child, following Yetu (who recently became a mother herself), Yoyo, and Yogi. More to come, but as it’s Mother’s Day in many parts of the world, we wanted to add our own piece to the celebrations. Here’s to mothers everywhere, especially our elephant mothers!show more

"One life rescued… and nine new lives to protect.... This is Rafaela. We rescued her in May while she was wandering alone through the market in the San Rafael district. She was alone, vulnerable, and struggling to survive. Shortly after, we discovered she was pregnant. Today, thanks to that rescue, Rafaela was able to give birth in a safe place, and her puppies are growing up with proper food, veterinary care, and plenty of love. But this story also reminds us of something very important: spaying and neutering save lives. Thousands of dogs are still born on the streets, where they face hunger, disease, abuse, and abandonment.
