Some of my storyboards from the opening of The... Wild Robot. I liked the idea of the first shot in the film (after the pull-out from her eye) being Roz in a fetal position for "The Robot Hatches." But the idea got lost as it went through the production pipeline. I ended up using some stock photography and videos for some of the water in this scene. I think because the environment was such a character for us in these opening scenes. The photography seemed to help me to sell the contrast between Roz and the wilderness.show more

How are insecure attachments repaired? This week I’ve been... exploring the concept of attachment (a deep emotional bond created between parents and their children during the earliest months and years of life). In doing so I’ve focused primarily on the goal of secure attachment. But not all attachments begin securely. Which begs a pair of questions: What causes insecure attachments and how can they be strengthened? While anxious and disorganized attachment types can certainly result from erratic parenting, the toxic stress created by unsafe environments, and/or abuse and neglect, it’s important to keep in mind that early relational challenges occur on a broad spectrum of severity and sometimes aren’t the result of any parental shortcoming at all. In fact, some root causes may not even be within parental control. Children born extremely prematurely, for example, may spend weeks or months in a neonatal intensive care unit. While essential to their survival, the situation can limit early interaction with even the most attentive and well equipped parents. What else might impact attachment quality? The list is likely a long one. Severe postpartum depression, a prolonged military deployment… anything that might present a barrier to strong relational health between a parent and child. In complex (traumatic) cases of disorganized attachment, families may require a combination of specialized infant mental health services, therapy, and other professional supports. But in many cases the solution is as simple as a heaping dose of what was missing in the first place: predictably warm and responsive interactions. Children are remarkably resilient - and while it may take time to create updated patterns of interaction and establish them as the “new normal,” insecure attachments can often become secure with focused effort. BREAKING: Ryanair passenger reportedly saved from being sucked out... the cabin after window fails during a flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen. According to local media Ryanair flight FR1879, a Boeing 737-8AS, returned safely to Greece on Friday after part of a damaged engine reportedly detached and struck a cabin window. A 61-year-old man, who is from Serbia upon the return of the plane, was taken to AHEPA and will undergo a CT scan to see if he has fractures. Speaking about the incident, the president of POEDIN (Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees), stressed that there was almost a tragedy, as a window was broken, the body of a passenger came out in the air and was restrained by his wife. A South Asian Muslim man was violently attacked and... injured shortly after arriving at the Islamic Cultural Center of New York on April 19 in Manhattan, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says. “The incident began as a minor vehicle collision but quickly escalated into a severe physical assault. The victim was allegedly placed in a chokehold, slammed to the ground, struck multiple times, and ultimately hit and dragged by the assailant’s vehicle for approximately half a city block,” CAIR said in a statement. The group shared footage of the attack on May 13 and accused the NYPD of failing to adequately investigate the assault. Despite video evidence, it reportedly took four days for police to assign a detective, and the alleged assailant has not yet been investigated, CAIR claims. “Almost a month has passed since this violent incident took place. The victim is rightfully seeking action from the police and has gone above and beyond to secure evidence. 🌊🌧 #MumbaiRains #floods: Why was flooding so severe in... #Vasai, #Virar & #Nalasopara this time? 🌧️ The rainfall was exceptional across the entire region. Both Vasai-Virar and its surrounding river catchments witnessed very heavy to extremely heavy rains. However, the widespread flooding wasn't caused by rainfall over Vasai-Virar alone, it was the result of multiple factors occurring simultaneously, with enormous upstream river discharge, tidal locking and urban drainage systems struggling to cope with such unprecedented volumes of water. The Ulhas River, originating near Lonavala, received extraordinary inflows after its upper catchment recorded around 1569 mm of rainfall in just 3 days. Torrential rain across the Ulhas Valley, Pune Ghats and Thane interiors sent enormous volumes of water into Vasai Creek.🌊🏞 At the same time, intense rainfall over the Nashik Ghats ⛰️, Igatpuri, Trimbakeshwar, Shahapur and Palghar swelled the Vaitarna River, which drains into the sea just north of Virar. The Tungareshwar ranges ⛰️ also received torrential rain, with numerous streams and nallas adding further runoff into the Vasai-Virar drainage network. Meanwhile, Vasai, Virar and Nalasopara themselves were experiencing torrential rainfall of about 600-700mm in last 3 days, generating massive local runoff. The region was effectively jammed from both sides. Massive upstream river discharge coincided with high tides 🌊, also during Monsoon the seas remain already rough slowing the outflow into the Arabian Sea and creating a backwater effect that prevented creeks and stormwater drains from emptying efficiently. Such an extraordinary volume of water would have stressed any drainage system. However, rapid urbanisation, shrinking wetlands and mangroves, encroachment of natural drainage channels and increasing concretisation have significantly reduced the region's natural capacity to store and drain floodwater, making the impacts even more severe. This event was a classic example of record-breaking rainfall across multiple river basins, intense local rain, tidal locking and urban infrastructure struggling to cope with an unprecedented volume of water. Today, inflows into the river systems 🌊 remain high, and several areas may continue to experience waterlogging and flooding. However, with rainfall expected to gradually reduce from now, river levels should slowly begin to recede as the excess water drains into the sea. According to their oral histories, the Wandjina came from the sky during the Dreaming, shaping the land, creating rivers, mountains, and laws that governed human life. They are associated with clouds, rain, and storms, and are understood as ongoing spiritual forces tied to weather and seasonal cycles. Their presence is preserved in distinctive rock art figures, typically shown with large, round heads, dark eyes, and no mouths, surrounded by halo patterns that are often interpreted as clouds or lightning. The absence of a mouth in Wandjina is not accidental. In traditional belief, if the Wandjina were given mouths, their power could become overwhelming, potentially unleashing endless rain and flooding. These beings are said to have laid down moral and social laws, instructing people on how to live, hunt, and maintain balance with the land. After completing their work, the Wandjina did not simply leave. They are believed to have entered the rock formations themselves, where they remain present and active. This mentality contributes to the high fatality rate on highways in Uttar Pradesh After driving on these roads for around 14 years, I’ve developed the habit of honking while passing trucks and buses, ensuring a margin of braking distance for sudden maneuvers by riders spitting paan, cattle appearing out of nowhere, people crossing without looking and of course, wrong-way driving Notice the timestamps between the two clips - such incidents occurred twice in five minutes during a 6 hour drive. If I were to compile all these instances, it would be like watching a short movie Though the speed may appear slow in the video, it was mostly around 100 km/hr. Over the past few days, I have received a... number of WhatsApp messages from Ghanaians currently in Cambodia, claiming they are stranded and living in extremely difficult conditions. Some say they are being pursued during immigration crackdowns, while others describe having no money, no shelter, limited access to food, and no means of returning home. The messages paint a troubling picture of desperation, fear, and uncertainty. One message that stood out was from a Ghanaian named Felix, who pleaded for help and attention to what he describes as a growing humanitarian situation involving Ghanaians and other Africans in Cambodia. According to him, many simply want assistance to return home safely to their families. I am still gathering information and seeking verification of the claims being made. However, the volume and consistency of these messages suggest a story that deserves attention. If Ghanaian authorities, diplomatic missions, or anyone with credible information on the situation is aware of what is happening, this may be the time to engage and provide clarity.show more

A dramatic moment unfolds along the riverbank as a... powerful Plains Zebra turns aggressive toward a vulnerable Wildebeest Calf. In the wild, survival often brings unexpected and brutal encounters. As the young calf struggles near the water’s edge, the zebra suddenly lashes out with incredible force. Using its strong hind legs, the zebra delivers a series of powerful kicks, striking the small calf and knocking it to the ground. Although zebras are primarily herbivores, they can be extremely territorial and defensive—especially around water sources where many animals gather. In these crowded areas, tension between species can escalate quickly. The zebra may perceive the calf as an intrusion or react instinctively to protect its space. The Wildebeest calf, still inexperienced and vulnerable, stands little chance against the zebra’s muscular build and sharp hooves. Each kick from the zebra is powerful enough to injure or even kill. Scenes like this remind us that life in the African wilderness is not only about predators and prey. Competition, instinct, and survival pressures can sometimes drive even plant-eating animals to extreme aggression. Our first test flight is just the beginning! Behind... the scenes, we are focused on up-scaling and improving our technology. We are excited to announce that we have successfully tested the central subsystem of our Helix 2.0 oxygen-rich staged-combustion engine: the powerpack. We have performed two successful hot-fire tests in which we have shown steady-state operation and cavitation limits. The powerpack incorporates the turbopump and pre-burner(s). It is the most complex as well as the most mechanically and thermally stressed subsystem of a staged-combustion engine. This milestone validated key technological challenges, such as the simultaneous ignition of multiple pre-burners and turbopump cavitation performance. The results are in-line with the predictions from our design models. The closed-cycle architecture of Helix allows us to push the performance envelope further: Helix 2.0 is designed to deliver double the thrust (200kN), while mass, production technology and costs remain comparable to Helix 1.0.
