This is how bad and pathetic the water situation... in Zimbabwe’s capital city, Harare, has become. A borehole is being drilled on Kaguvi Street, outside HT Tyres. This is what corruption does to a country, central government controls everything in councils, resulting in this collapse. In cities like Harare, the need for boreholes reflects how corruption and central government interference have crippled local authorities, stripping them of the capacity to provide basic services. Boreholes in central business districts indicate that the municipal water supply system has failed. In a functioning city, clean and reliable piped water should be standard, particularly in central areas. Most of Harare, including the most affluent areas, does not receive piped water at all. The Water Act clearly states that Central Government (ZANUPF Government) should build dams! This has not been done due to rampant historic corruption. Harare and its dormitory towns rely on Lake Chivero, which was constructed by the colonial government in 1952 to provide clean drinking water for Harare and its surrounding areas, with a total population of 300,000 people. Today, it serves the Harare metropolitan area and satellite towns such as Chitungwiza, Epworth, Norton, and Ruwa with a total population of around 4.5 million people. The same lake that provides drinking water also receives untreated sewage. Residents have resorted to boreholes, sadly, something the last colonial ruler Ian Smith predicted would happen. Bgwende is one of the members of the Constitutional Defence Forum who have been vocal in opposing President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s bid to extend his rule to 2030. According to witnesses, the arsonists arrived in three black cars, ordered the occupants to vacate the house, poured a flammable substance, and set it ablaze. Two police officers are currently on the scene, but the house has been completely destroyed and is now uninhabitable. The seminar room at SAPES, which was meant to be used by a group of civil society and political leaders to launch their resistance against President Mnangagwa’s 2030 term extension, was also torched in the early hours of yesterday and completely gutted to the ground. The attack, coming just hours before the planned press conference, underscores the regime’s growing desperation to silence dissenting voices and suppress any organised opposition to the 2030 agenda. Interestingly, the 2030 Agenda has inadvertently breathed new life into opposition politics in Zimbabwe. Where there was once apathy and fragmentation in response to the country’s political decay, the push for a term extension has now united groups and individuals who were previously divided, bringing together former rivals under a common cause to resist it. Today, the 11-day sit-in protest by the families of forcibly disappeared Baloch individuals was attacked by the forces when they were marching towards the Red Zone. Elderly men, women, and children were subjected to brutal violence, including live firing. Dozens of protesters were taken into custody and shifted to unknown locations. For decades, the state institutions' response to peaceful demonstrations has been violence and intimidation. The forced disappearances and genocide of the Baloch people continue, and when the families and civil society protest, they are treated with cruelty, beaten, dragged, and imprisoned. After facing severe crackdown, the protesters have reorganized and continued their protest.
