How do we help learners find a pathway to success that is meaningful to them? Too often, “success” is determined by others for our students, but everyone reading this right now could consider themselves successful, but have very different measures on what that means to them. If I don’t have a say on what success looks like to me, why would I care about getting to someone else’s destination? This is something I have been thinking about a lot since I was the opening keynote at #NAGC23 this past week, and how I emphasized the importance of focusing on bringing out the gifts in EVERY learner we serve, including our adults. We can’t bring out the best in our students if we only focus on the deficits of what we do as adults in education. It is imperative that we don’t just “value” people but that people feel valued. There is a difference in those two ideas. Here is a question I have really been focused on over the last few years; Do our students walk out of school all good at the same thing, or do they all walk out knowing they are good at something? Not everything that is important to bring out the gifts in our students can be easily measured, but not all things that matter can fit into nice and neat metrics. The whole point of decentralization is to have the infrastructure as diversified as possible to ensure maximum security for the project. As we were starting out and were still small, we had to test multiple different providers, including smaller ones, to find the best options for the project based on three different criteria: price, security level, and scalability. As we moved forward and got introduced to different connections, we transitioned to enterprise-level providers. We are still in talks with many of them and actively searching for more, as this is a never-ending process. Below is a video from one of our smaller data centers (one of the contractors we used earlier). This showcases how small and diversified our infrastructure is and also must be in the future, as this is the key to decentralization.

Karl Popper on How We Gain Knowledge: ––Karl Popper: "People think, usually, that we acquire knowledge by opening our eyes and our ears and let the sensations stream into us, and they believe then that we record this like a camera. In my opinion, if we wish to get knowledge, we have to have a problem. It has to be knowledge of something. We have to find out something. We don't have to wait for information to stream into us, but we have to be inquisitive if we want to get knowledge. If we were passive, we would gain a confused mass of sensations or something like that, which we would hardly be able to understand and to convert into what one may call knowledge. Quite apart from that, perception is not really, in my opinion, the main source of our knowledge. The role of perception is to inform us about a momentary situation in our environment. But we couldn't really interpret our perceptions without knowing much more about our environment, namely, we know whether we are in a house or whether we are in a glacier. So we have two kinds of knowledge: this wider knowledge of a frame in which we orientate ourselves, and the momentary perception which gives us information about the situation at that particular moment. This teacher says if you ever wonder why people are leaving the teaching profession in droves, this is one of the main reasons. She has students that she has written an incident report on every single day. She has contacted the principal and the support staff and the help that was given to her was to email the parents of the students. Basically, no help or support at all. We have many epidemics in our country but this is one of the biggest that doesn’t get enough attention. We all know our school system is a failure but even more than we know. Students these days have zero consequences. They are passed with straight F’s. They are allowed to be a continuing distraction and disruption in the classrooms and nothing is done about it. We need to start over. 💯 Why do we allow this this as a school? As a district? As a city? As a state? As a country? It didn’t use to be like this? This is an annual flea market where students bring their used toys, books and anything they don’t want to school to sell to their fellow schoolmates and even teachers. Before the market starts, we teach them how to advertise, price, negotiate and give change. This way, they can learn the art of buying and selling, get rid of things they don’t want and have fun. These are practical skills and knowledge that we should also give our children in Nigeria. Not all of them, but some of them will find their calling in business and can start at a young age. Our teachers have an instrumental role to play in teaching them, encouraging them and gaining other skills other than just teaching students what is in text books.
