Just to clarify, you used a total of 36kg (40kg storage with 10% reserve) of Hydrogen to fly 522 miles at $5 per kg of Clean Hydrogen = $180. And Department of Energy reckons they can get Clean Hydrogen production costs down to $1 by 2031! So $36! With zero downtime for charging

Guys this is truly remarkable. I just took a flight today from Gladstone to Brisbane QLD today which is 300 miles in an ancient jetliner for $400 one way. Your aircraft flew 523 miles on water. I know the economics of this will come way down over the next 5-10 years. This is the sort of 10x innovation you expect from silicon valley and you are delivering it in the plane loads. Congratulations to all of the Joby team keep up the great work. From a proud investor in Australia 🦘🎉

Well done from a technical standpoint - very impressive. I do question the economics though, because if a BEV can do the same duty cycle as a hydrogen vehicle, the BEV will always be cheaper (not to mention simpler and easier to maintain).

Shows a lack of focus IMO. Why are they spending time & resources doing this stunt? It’s a very cool milestone, but it’s an odd thing to be doing right now when you’re pre-revenue and supposed to be gearing up for the massive undertaking of bringing an eVTOL aircraft to market…

40kg H2 = 1,333 kWh of raw H2 energy minus 10% left in the tank = 1200 kWh Divide by 523 miles = 2.3 kWh/mile This is less than some petrol cars. The batteries will be fully charged before take off, so will increase the energy per mile, but probably not by a lot. We also don't know if it was carrying the equivalent of fully loaded passenger weight. We should also factor in the energy lost in producing the hydrogen, but if it's from electrolysis using excess renewables that would otherwise be curtailed then it's a moot point.
