“A book is more powerful than a scroll.” When MBK Ambassador Ikenna Okoye (Uniondale, NY) wants to get grounded, it’s not an app or a guided meditation that he opens — it’s a book. Ikenna takes President Obama’s advice that “Reading is the gateway skill that makes all other... learning possible.” He believes that reading helps us feel grounded, connecting to something bigger and beyond our own experiences. Ikenna is putting that belief into action by advancing MBK Milestone 2: ensuring students read at grade level by third grade. He tracks reading progress across his school district and helps schools celebrate their successes along the way. The Atlantic just ran a piece called "The Age of Reading Is Over." We are literally losing the ability to read anything longer than an Instagram post. This is not good. Think about history for a second. During the slave trade, what was the one thing punishable by death? Teaching a slave to read. Why? Because tyrants have always known that literacy is the ultimate key to human freedom. Less than half of American adults read a single book in 2022. It’s so bad that a staffer at Harvard actually complained that assigning books to students is "arbitrarily withholding information" because it forces them to use a "difficult medium." Let that sink in. IVY LEAGUE STUDENTS have a hard time reading something and then paraphrasing it. If we stop reading, we go straight back to the dark ages. We'll be sitting around waiting for a government agency or an AI script to tell us what the Constitution means through a paraphrased post on X.

Parents often ask me about the best way to engage infants in lap reading - noting, at the very earliest stages, that their babies aren’t always real attentive to books. It’s important, first and foremost, to note that infant attention spans are very short. So know that it’s okay to start small… reading for just a minute or two at a time. But there are also ways you can optimize your chances of a successful experience. One trick is to literally turn things around, as illustrated by this great video from justjessfood on IG, who (with the assistance of a supportive pillow) has turned lap reading into a face-to-face social experience. There’s nothing your baby loves more than your face… as evidenced by this sweet little guy who arguably takes more delight in mom’s expressive reading than in a view of the book itself. My Orton-Gillingham training changed the way I approach reading instruction. I adapted many OG strategies for my #MLL students including Code packs. Code packs are an essential strategy for students who cannot guess or predict words they don’t know. The only way to read a word is by sounding it out. But to sound it out, they MUST know the individual letter/sound associations. This is the focus of Emily Hanford’s Sold A Story podcast. Note: This is ONE of many important instructional strategies within a #StructuredLiteracy approach that helps with word reading skills for struggling #FSL readers. That's an understatement. Everything I do would not be possible without it. If I can read 5 or 10x more quickly than someone who's comparably well educated or similar IQ — just a huge advantage and they're not really going to make up for it. And since I can read fast, my rate of return for reading more is also high. So I'm reading faster and I'm reading more and then that cumulates and it's just very hard for people to catch up to that. It's great."

Does your little one want to hear the same book over and over and over again? The repetition can be a little maddening for us as parents, but for children it’s actually very beneficial. Favorite books are not only familiar and comforting, but support vocabulary growth and - importantly - your child’s own participation in the reading experience. I just love this video of little Theo and his mom as they read Eric Carle’s Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother Too? Not only can you tell it’s a book they’ve read together many times, but the familiar, repetitive pattern of the text itself allows Theo to play a role in the reading. Watch as he provides an enthusiastic “YES!” at the beginning of each page. (Note too what a good job he does at matching his “yes” response to the appropriate point in the text itself. It’s the first thing said after each page is turned.) As for vocabulary growth, repeated exposure to new words helps children to internalize vocabulary more rapidly with one study suggesting that children are more likely to incorporate new vocabulary from a book read three times than from three different books read one time apiece. This is extremely serious “The literacy crisis is worse than you think it is. I'm an ex-high school history and government teacher” She explains most students cent read past a 4 letter word and students fail consistently at spelling their own name correctly, in high school…. “It's not just that the kids can't read. I mean, they can't. If it's longer than a 4 letter word, then go ahead and count that as a loss. They don't know how to capitalize. They don't know how to punctuate. They can't write more than a paragraph. Honestly, a paragraph is generous, but it's more than that. They have no reading comprehension. They have no critical thinking skills. They can't read an article or a paragraph and pull out critical information in order to help answer a question. And I know a lot of you are thinking like, "Well, you're the teacher. That's your job is to teach them how to do those things." And it's like, well, actually, I'm a high school history teacher. They are past the point of me teaching them how to read higher than an elementary school reading level. My job isn't to teach them how to read. That was the teachers before them. And I'm not blaming them either — it's a much bigger problem than me just not teaching them how to read. I had a student in high school who could not consistently spell their name correctly on the paper. Literally, I would get it, and it'd be spelled different every time and obviously not right every single time. And when I mentioned that I think that they should be in the special ed classroom rather than my high school world history classroom, I was told that I don't know about inclusivity” “No Child Left Behind has really, really hurt the education system — There is going to be a noticeably huge gap in generations when it comes to literacy, in advancements in our society because there's no reason that the majority of the students I taught cannot read or write above elementary school level, honestly”
