The Atlantic just ran a piece called "The Age of Reading Is Over." We are literally losing the ability to read anything longer than an Instagram post. This is not good. Think about history for a second. During the slave trade, what was the one thing punishable by death? Teaching a slave to read. Why? Because tyrants have always known that literacy is the ultimate key to human freedom. Less than half of American adults read a single book in 2022. It’s so bad that a staffer at Harvard actually complained that assigning books to students is "arbitrarily withholding information" because it forces them to use a "difficult medium." Let that sink in. IVY LEAGUE STUDENTS have a hard time reading something and then paraphrasing it. If we stop reading, we go straight back to the dark ages. We'll be sitting around waiting for a government agency or an AI script to tell us what the Constitution means through a paraphrased post on X.

Parents often ask me about the best way to engage infants in lap reading - noting, at the very earliest stages, that their babies aren’t always real attentive to books. It’s important, first and foremost, to note that infant attention spans are very short. So know that it’s okay to start small… reading for just a minute or two at a time. But there are also ways you can optimize your chances of a successful experience. One trick is to literally turn things around, as illustrated by this great video from justjessfood on IG, who (with the assistance of a supportive pillow) has turned lap reading into a face-to-face social experience. There’s nothing your baby loves more than your face… as evidenced by this sweet little guy who arguably takes more delight in mom’s expressive reading than in a view of the book itself. And that’s just fine! He’s still accruing all the language benefits as they bond. And talk about an appreciative audience! Next time you read with your baby try configuring the situation so that they can see both you and the book. You may find it makes a big difference.

Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger on why reading fast is overrated: At a Berkshire Hathaway meeting, shareholder Keith McGawan asks Buffett for advice on reading faster, noting that Buffett gets through five newspapers a day plus a steady diet of 10Ks and 10Qs. Buffett's answer is disarmingly humble. Despite his legendary reading habit, he confesses: "Unfortunately, I'm not a fast reader." He even adds that Charlie can read faster than he can, and that "it's a huge advantage to be able to read fast." Then he tells a story on himself, by way of Woody Allen: "I read War and Peace last night in 20 minutes. It's about Russia." That punchline, Buffett admits, hits a little too close: "that's the problem I have when I try and read fast. I get all through reading the book and I say it's about business." But for Buffett, the point was never the speed. It's the act itself: "There's hardly anything more pleasurable... than reading and reading and reading and reading. And Charlie and I do a lot of it. We continue to do a lot of it." Then Munger reframes the entire question and quietly dismantles the premise: "I think speed is overestimated. I had a roommate at Caltech who had a very distinguished mind and I could do problems faster than he could, but he never made a mistake and I did. So I wouldn't be too discouraged if you have to go a little slower. What the hell difference does it make?"

Code packs are an essential strategy for students who cannot guess or predict words they don’t know. The only way to read a word is by sounding it out. But to sound it out, they MUST know the individual letter/sound associations. This is the focus of Emily Hanford’s Sold A Story podcast. Note: This is ONE of many important instructional strategies within a #StructuredLiteracy approach that helps with word reading skills for struggling #FSL readers. That's an understatement. Everything I do would not be possible without it. If I can read 5 or 10x more quickly than someone who's comparably well educated or similar IQ — just a huge advantage and they're not really going to make up for it. And since I can read fast, my rate of return for reading more is also high. So I'm reading faster and I'm reading more and then that cumulates and it's just very hard for people to catch up to that. It's great."

Even Elon Musk was able to teach himself about the fundamentals of rocket design and astrodynamics by reading books. He is often quoted on this topic: “I read books and talked to people. I mean that's kind of how one learns anything. There's lots of great books out there and lots of smart people.” Building a startup is an infinite set of problems that are being thrown at you. Next time you’re facing one of those problems, I’d recommend finding the best book or blog post you can on the topic and reading it. Every few years a new silly speed-reading hack becomes popular, here's the latest one: It's called Quantum Speed-Reading (QSR). How does it work? The faster you flip through a book, the faster you 'read' it. Using QSR, kids can 'read' 100,000 words in 5 minutes. Yumiko Tobitani, the creator of QSR, presented no scientific evidence for her method. Instead, she says that "when a book is flipped through at high speed the words are transformed into images and come out as pictures," and that flipping through a book helps you pick up "the thought vibrations emanating from it." QSR training centers are popping up across China and Japan and charging students $860 to teach them this new reading method.

Does your little one want to hear the same book over and over and over again? The repetition can be a little maddening for us as parents, but for children it’s actually very beneficial. Favorite books are not only familiar and comforting, but support vocabulary growth and - importantly - your child’s own participation in the reading experience. I just love this video of little Theo and his mom as they read Eric Carle’s Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother Too? Not only can you tell it’s a book they’ve read together many times, but the familiar, repetitive pattern of the text itself allows Theo to play a role in the reading. Watch as he provides an enthusiastic “YES!” at the beginning of each page. (Note too what a good job he does at matching his “yes” response to the appropriate point in the text itself. It’s the first thing said after each page is turned.) As for vocabulary growth, repeated exposure to new words helps children to internalize vocabulary more rapidly with one study suggesting that children are more likely to incorporate new vocabulary from a book read three times than from three different books read one time apiece. When it comes to infants, however, lap reading can deprive babies of their favorite (and most important) sight: YOU. Which is why you might want to explore face-to-face reading as well. (With your baby facing toward you and the book simultaneously.) Developmentally, there are multiple benefits to allowing your baby to see you as you read together. Your little one is an expert at “reading” your face. This posture allows your baby to track your eyes to discover what you’re tuning in to. It also allows them to watch your mouth and learn how you’re making the words and sounds that accompany the pictures. This clever little one illustrates the case beautifully, creating a face-to-face experience of her own.
