David Friedberg explains why Mamdani’s government grocery stores will actually succeed in the short term, and why that’s the entire point. They don’t need them to work long-term. They just need the spectacle in time for 2028. “I think that these things are going to create a radical Spectacle...

The suppliers will charge double, the dei hires won't be able to keep the shelves stocked, and the dei employees will not show up.

For sure it’ll fail eventually. But unfortunately maybe not soon enough

Their costs are lower. No property tax, free land, subsidies. So I can't wait for the local grocery stores to sue him. No way they can compete, and when there is no more competition the govt store will be free to raise prices because money is fungible When the store sells items at cost and actually loses money the taxpayer will be on the hook for the balance. That last askect of theft will be invisible to the NPCs because their soda and chips will be cheaper of front

This is exactly how it’s going to play out.

@rodmatthews77 You’re forgetting one big thing. Crime. His low information voters expect everything to be free and they will start taking stuff immediately. Then he will have a PR nightmare. If he arrest people, his base will scream. If he doesn’t arrest people crime will snowball way B4 2028.

Wrong - he’s never been to the Bronx, where they will have brawls over who gets the cheap food on day 1. The bodega owners will send their employees and friends and family to get food to resell and food will be sold on the sidewalks for a markup. This is just another hot take they want to replay if he ends up right. But he won’t. NYC can’t run anything smoothly.

Unfortunately as history has shown, once a socialist policy has taken hold it’s near impossible to correct course, no matter how economically damaging it is. Free and cheap groceries will be expected and even demanded. No politician will campaign on “taking food of the table of the average citizens”.

This idiot says the employees are going to be paid but won’t have to work too hard. Great. Chalk up another Communist idea - money for nothing and your kicks for free.

Government run ‘low cost’ grocery stores created to feed the poor are an unnecessary redundancy. Poor people in the US don’t pay for groceries. They eat better than the middle class using food stamps. So why have low cost grocery stores for people who eat for free? Perhaps the stores aren’t for us at all. Is this a workaround to keep support flowing to non-Americans?

Using tax payer dollars to open a grocery store, then charge 30% less and put the American owned family owned business’ that have been in communities for decades out of business. This is another form of seizing land now they will seize your business. And then you can become a government employee. Yeah that sounds great?!? To hell with the DSA

No money for food, but always money for war. If we weren't burning money in Israel I would agree with you, but billions for war , we can have some cheap good too

I don't think a sound financial plan is "who cares who pays for it, that's for someone way down the line and I don't think that's important". 😳 WTF 🙃 I think it's time for the colleges who were paid large amounts of money for essentially making people extremely dumb to pay some reparations. They did this they need to fix it. They broke them

The globalists, the college professors with the left over hippie mentality and the tabloid media have broken the minds of the spoiled envious youth. If we stop the sources and get their tuition money back we can begin to deprogram the little idiots.

North Korea has a history of putting up fake shops and grocery stores that appears to be fully stocked when looking from afar through their shop windows, but in reality, all the products were either fake props or the store wasn't actually open for people to acquire anything.

What a crock of shit those grocery stores are gonna be ripped off in mass mass numbers of people are gonna rip that place off to the point where it’s gonna cost a fortune for a police to stay at the front door oh I forgot the new mayor wants to get rid of the police so they won’t be any police to arrest people for stealing because stealing in New York City is legalized. Just saying.

You folks who hate socialism and continue to defend the wealthy and ignore the growing wealth inequality are quietly helping to bring socialism about lol. As the average person continues to get pinched and marginalized, and the rich get richer, what the fuck do you think is going to happen???

The part that won’t be talked about, is limited items, bad product, limited products, not being able to get the products you want, etc. A true communistic grocery store - it won’t be a Albertsons or Publix…it will be an Aldi…but a smaller version of an Aldi…that will make people mad.

If a grocery store functions on about a 3% profit margin on staple items…. The government group store marks them down 30%. Why wouldn’t the store owners go over and buy the merchandise from the government run store? Remember, there’s no constraints or IDs required

Explain how, you charge 30% less, Pay well above minimum wage and they will be hugely popular, how will they keep stock on the shelves when so popular, how much is it going to cost the tax payer for cheaper goods higher wages, because you still have shoplifters too, it doesn’t work. Tell us where it has worked anywhere else. There will be empty shelves/low stock, there’s no longevity on these models…..

Bodegas will strip the shelves bare and resell. Other people will strip the shelves bare to resell on the street. Then comes IDs and rationing. Then the lines come. The only people willing to wait in line are already on the dole and already Demmunist voters. Taxpayers just get higher taxes.

Friedberg Predicts NYC’s Socialist Grocery Stores Will Be Wildly Popular and a DSA Marketing Tool for 2028 david friedberg: “I think that people have it wrong. I think these grocery stores are going to be wildly popular. I think that everyone's being a little bit too long-sighted in their view on what's going to happen with these grocery stores, with the basic obvious economic arithmetic that someone has to pay for this, and who's going to pay for it, and blah, blah, blah. I don't think it really matters because over the near term, what the cheap grocery stores do is create an incredible success story for socialism that will help to support and fuel the socialist wave in urban centers around this country. Think about the social network effect of the grocery store. So there's a couple of them, and then people start traveling from far away to the cheap grocery store because it has this discount. Again, this'll play out over the next 24 months, going into the 2028 election cycle, and everyone's like, ‘This is so wildly popular. People are coming in from all over the place to go to these grocery stores.’ They're not checking IDs, because IDs are racist, and you can't check IDs to vote, so we shouldn't be able to check IDs for grocery stores. So people will come in from all over the place to use these grocery stores. The demand will go up. And then they'll start to open more and more grocery stores like this. And let's say each one loses $10 million/year and they get to 10 or 20 of these. That's $200 million of losses/year on the grocery store chain. But it creates this extraordinary social movement for more of these grocery stores supporting the DSA and so on. $200 million/year on a $125 billion/year budget for the city of New York is nothing. It's less than a quarter of a percent of the city's budget. That is so cheap to market the DSA platform, and to get the DSA platform to become a social marketing element that drives the next wave here. So again, I do think that these grocery stores, believe it or not, they sound silly, they sound small, but I predict that they will be deemed a point of success, and they will end up being a big part of the fuel for the DSA going into 2028.”
