It’s great the effort to remove the trash getting it to the Gulf. However, it’s equally important to have the same effort to avoid the trash getting thin to the rivers in first place. What are the plans, if any, from the local governments?

While trying to solve ocean plastic pollution, we've had a few unscheduled learning opportunities. Interceptor Trashfence in Guatemala was one of them. Hear it from Guillermo, who was on site when it broke back in 2022. After its failure, we deployed Interceptor 006 and 021, which are now successfully stopping trash from reaching the Gulf of Honduras.

121 truckloads of trash won’t end up in the Caribbean Sea, thanks to Interceptor 006. The trash we find in rivers such as Las Vacas consists of lighter, softer plastics such as bottles, single-use containers, and packaging, alongside a portion of glass, metal, sand, and organics. Together with partners, we work on identifying appropriate destinations for each waste stream. For instance, some of the PET bottles we sorted from previous catches in Guatemala were used to create a limited edition LP in partnership with Coldplay.

UPDATE: Interceptor Barricade is now operational, and we have extracted over 850,000 kg of trash in the last few weeks. Now we await the real test: a heavy flood and a trash tsunami bringing hundreds of tons of plastic in just a few hours to fully validate our solution.

Visiting our Rio Las Vacas project while I’m here in Guatemala. During the rainy season, we’re intercepting dozens of truckloads like this one on a daily basis. All of this would have otherwise ended up in the Caribbean. Pretty insane.
