NEWS: Rivian haș unveiled its Autonomy chip and Gen 3 Autonomy Computer, which the company says is designed to solve the needs of autonomous driving. Chip: • Mutli-chip module • TSMC 5nm • Neural engine: Rivian designed • 800+ TOPS • In-house designed software stack "RAP1 powers the company’s third-generation Autonomy computer, the Autonomy Compute Module 3. Key specs include: • 1600 sparse INT8 TOPS • The processing power of 5 billion pixels per second. • RAP1 features RivLink, a low latency interconnect technology allowing chips to be connected to multiply processing power, making it inherently extensible. • RAP1 is enabled by an in-house developed AI compiler and platform software.” Rivian: “In addition to ACM3, Rivian plans to integrate LiDAR into future R2 models. LiDAR will augment the company’s multi-modal sensor strategy, providing detailed, three-dimensional spatial data and redundant sensing, and improving real-time detection for the edge cases of driving. Our Gen 3 Autonomy hardware including ACM3 and LiDAR is currently undergoing validation and we expect it to ship on R2 models starting at the end of 2026.”

Tesla’s vision-only approach to solve FSD got laughed at for many years. People called it reckless, said just cameras would never be enough, and even claimed Tesla was cutting corners. Fast forward to today, it’s pretty clear who was right. “It’s so obvious you can solve this with cameras. Why wouldn’t you solve with cameras? It’s 2026. The self-driving problem is not a sensor problem, it’s an AI problem. The cameras have enough information already. It’s a problem of extracting the information, which is an AI problem.” - Ashok Elluswamy, VP of AI at Tesla. Just like us humans, we drive with eyes, we walk with eyes, literally we do everything with our eyes. We don’t have lidar spinning and laser beams on our heads. We simply see the world and our brain figures it out… all from vision. For so many years, the industry treated autonomy like it was a hardware problem. Like “if cameras struggle, just add more sensors.” That’s exactly how companies like Waymo ended up with sensor towers that look like crazy science projects. So ugly btw too… That approach might have made sense in 2008, but not today! Bc back then, AI wasn’t good enough to truly understand the world. So engineers had no choice but to lean on lidar and radar for help. But today, cameras capture insane amounts of information, I’m talking billions of pixels every second. The thing that was missing was AI intelligence. And when AI can understand why a car is slowing or why a pedestrian is hesitating, or real world things, you just need a better brain instead of more sensors. And now, everyone else is realizing this… the future of autonomy was always about understanding the world through vision, just like we humans do. That’s the bet that Elon and Tesla made early on… he was already years ahead of everyone, when everyone was doubling down on LiDAR and radar, even when so many people mocked them for switching early. Tesla vision for the win!!! 🥇

Nissan has unveiled its next-gen driver assist AI technology called ProPilot, which the company says will be on par with Tesla's FSD when it is released by March 2028. “We think ours is smarter than Tesla FSD, just not as polished as a product,” said Nissan. The prototype vehicles feature 11 cameras, 5 radar sensors, and a next-generation LiDAR sensor. "Demonstrated on Ariya prototype vehicles in downtown Tokyo, the system combines Wayve AI Driver software with Nissan’s Ground Truth Perception and next-generation LiDAR."

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe in new interview on self-driving: "Tesla's got a huge fleet. So our approach is we have to catch up with them and compete. And so we're going to have more cameras with better dynamic range. We're going to supplement that with LiDAR that provides better safety for edge case conditions and allows us to train the vision models faster. And the incremental cost to do that is relatively small. And in fact any of the incremental costs that would have been there on its own is offset by the fact that we brought inference in house and reduced the cost of our inference platform so dramatically from what we have in your car. Your car uses an Nvidia inference platform. I say all this because in like the infinite long-term you know, you could make the case that once the models are very very robust you could have less cameras or you may be able to get away with less radar. It's not clear yet if that's the case for covering all these corner cases."

"In the near term, I think it's going to be very difficult—and Elon would tell me I'm wrong—to build a camera-only product that has superhuman levels of safety. At some point will it be possible? Quite possible yes; Solid state LiDAR is $500. Why not include LiDAR as well in order to achieve super human safety. All of our partners are using a combination of camera, radar and LiDAR, and I personally think that's the right solution, but I could be proven wrong."
