John Goodman has never won an Oscar- Hell, he’s somehow never even been *nominated* for an Oscar. I desperately hope that changes with Goodman’s performance in the upcoming film Digger alongside Tom Cruise. Goodman is everywhere in the trailer Cruise released today. I’ve also read early reviews singing Goodman’s praises. I hope this is finally his moment.

Donnie Brasco is streaming on Netflix & if you need something to help you get through the week, I can’t recommend this film enough. I always say that Donnie Brasco is a “second-tier” mob movie but if a film like this came out today, it’d be a massive, massive hit. Pacino is so endearing in this movie.

Michael Clarke Duncan earned an #Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding work in The Green Mile. I never really write about this film- I should change that. This is such a great late ‘90s movie with a vintage Tom Hanks performance. Great, great film.

Vincent in Collateral (2004) is still one of the coolest things Tom Cruise has ever done. Nobody really imagined Cruise playing a cold, detached hitman at the time, which is exactly why the performance hits so hard. He absolutely nailed the villain role.

Michael Mann recently commented on Instagram that he’s seen Tom Cruise’s performance in Digger & it’s amazing. Game recognize game. A reminder that Mann & Cruise have worked together & when they did…it was sheer excellence. Collateral is some of the best work Cruise has ever done. It’s also an all-time great LA film.

Tom Cruise is obviously known for his action films & stunt work, but he’s still an underrated actor. Collateral is Cruise at his most sinister, acting on fire. No clue what the Oscars have against Cruise- he deserved a nomination for this film.

I didn’t initially love The Book of Eli when I first saw it in theaters, but after a few rewatches, I’ve really grown to appreciate Denzel Washington’s performance in this film. You start to see why Denzel took this role after multiple viewings. Gary Oldman is also fantastic here

Tom Cruise’s performance in The Last Samurai is one of the first things I bring up anytime someone ignorantly suggests that Cruise can’t act. Cruise is quietly vulnerable in this role & his physicality and dedication is impeccable. Cruise’s nonverbal acting in this film is some of the best of his career. Don’t ever question this man’s acting chops.

Matthew McConaughey’s performance in the 2013 film Mud has aged exceptionally well. This film is outstanding & if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend. The story of two boys who encounter a fugitive on an island, this is McConaughey at his best. Also shoutout Sam Shepard.

Mystic River might not be Clint Eastwood’s best film (that would be Unforgiven) but I’d argue that Sean Penn’s Oscar-winning performance here is the best performance in any Eastwood film ever. Hackman in Unforgiven comes close, but Penn is the best out of Eastwood’s films.
