XPeng released several short clips showcasing their updated VLA 2.0 self-driving software in China. XPeng dropped LiDAR in favor of a camera-vision approach, similar to Tesla. Their CEO recently visited the U.S. to test Tesla FSD V14.2 and said it was near Level 4 performance.

The idea that Tesla is alone in the race to develop end-to-end vision system for self-driving and delivering into consumer vehicles is officially dead. Like dead, dead. I tested Xpeng's VLA 2.0 in the streets of Beijing, and it is comparable to my experience of daily driving Tesla FSD v14. Xpeng is not charging $100 a month to drive this. It is inlcuded in its higher-trim vehicles and it already caught the attention of Volkswagen, which is going to integrate into its own vehicles - something Tesla hasn't been able to do despite trying. Elon Musk just dropped a Tesla bombshell in Davos. Insurance companies are now offering Tesla drivers 50% off if they use full self-driving. MUSK: “Recently some of the insurance companies have said that it is so safe, Tesla full self-driving is so safe, that they’re offering customers half price insurance, if they use Tesla full self-driving in their car.” Then he added: “I think self-driving cars is essentially a solved problem at this point.”

This Chinese vlogger is both Tesla and XPeng owner. He is an avid tester of Tesla FSD and Xpeng NGP. He points out NGP almost always comes to an abrupt halt when humans or mopeds get real close or cross intersections as evidenced in this clip, even though there is ample time to gradually slow down, making driving extremely uncomfortable. This is not an isolated case. It exists with other XPeng owners. On the other hand, the owner says FSD is very reassuring and predictable. Other systems may have a fewer takeover rates than FSD for now but he still prefers FSD because of its driving comfort, smoothness and confidence.

XPENG founder and CEO He Xiaopeng announced that they will release a new generation of humanoid robots next month, introducing a new AI system, VLT, combined with five other systems, including VLA/VLM. The goal is to transition humanoid robots from remote-controlled to fully autonomous. Their second-generation humanoid robot, Iron, released last year, is already undergoing trial operations at the XPENG factory in Guangzhou and serving as a shopping guide in the flagship store. It's worth noting that Tesla plans to release the Optimus V3 by the end of the year.

PC AUTO, a known Chinese auto publication, recently reviewed intelligent driving systems from eight major brands: Huawei, BYD, XPeng, Zeekr, LI, Xiaomi, NIO and Tesla. In 2 scenarios where a tree is in the way, FSD is the only system that successfully drove around to stay the course. Every other system failed to proceed. For context, FSD is the only system that doesn’t use lidars. Looks like vision-based approach is superior and can solve edge cases which lidars may not.

Here’s my first drive on Tesla FSD V14.2. For the first time on V14, I had zero hesitation or braking issues all day, and no interventions. From a driving perspective, and after 85 miles on and off-camera on V14.2 today, it now feels as comfortable, if not more so, than V13 did, but with all the capabilities of V14. What’s new in FSD V14.2: • Self-Driving stats section that tells you exactly how many Self-Driving miles you’ve driven and the percentage of FSD miles • You can now select speed profiles and parking preferences while in park • Upgraded the neural network vision encoder, leveraging higher resolution features to further improve scenarios like handling emergency vehicles, obstacles on the road, and human gestures • Big improvement (in my experience) to overall everyday driving comfortability • Slightly less strict attention monitoring at times In my opinion, V14.2 is good enough to be sent to every AI4 owner where FSD is legal, and for Tesla to encourage non-FSD owners/subscribers to try it. FSD did have a couple weird navigation decisions it made in my video, but that’s my only complaint. Overall, great version of FSD. 4K YouTube version of my video in thread below:

Tesla Cybertruck with HW4 using FSD v13.2.8 did not hit the wall in a new recreation of Mark Rober's "Wile E. Coyote-Style" self-driving test. However, a Model Y with HW3 using FSD 12.5.4.2 was going to hit the wall. Nice test @alsetcenter

BMW just released a video showing their newly produced driverless vehicles traveling over one kilometer through their factory in Dingolfing, Germany. Unlike Tesla, the system relies completely on LiDAR. Tesla uses AI and computer vision to autonomously move their vehicles outside from the production line, to the loading docks. Over 1.2 miles. The Tesla Full Self-Driving software, which is really just AI and cameras, we don’t use radars or LIDAR or anything like that. It’s really trying to drive the car in the same way that a human drives the car, primarily with vision and with a biological neural net. We take the same approach with our vehicles, which is a digital neural net and cameras. I expect this approach to ultimately be at least an order of magnitude safer than humans driving. It is quite magical because the car feels like it is sentient. It actually feels like it’s alive and you can actually, as we improve the software, feel the sentience growing in the car. We already have some vehicles operating with no people inside with no safety monitors in three cities in Texas and probably will be widespread in the US by the end of this year and hopefully in Israel too" Tesla FSD is beginning to feel more and more sentient with each update, it’s incredible. All without the use of Radar or LiDAR. It’s all about the 🧠.

Tesla self-driving version 14.2.2.2 gave up five times due bright sunlight. Is this the robotaxi version? What happens when there's no one in the front seat to rescue FSD when it gets scared of shadows and sunlight? No one knows whether or not safe Level 5 autonomy is possible with vision-only. If vision-only is possible then all the actual robotaxi companies could just stop using their LiDAR and radar. If it isn't, $TSLA is doomed.
