I don’t believe in evolution but on a naturalist account of everything… Alex is right. It makes no sense to say you’d go from no moral law or value to having a moral law and value as monkey->humans. On theism God of course could step in and make humans have something like a divine spark or intrinsic value. The real question is, if atheism is true and we’re all just animals, why is there a moral law and why do human beings have value?

This point isn’t brought up nearly enough, but Joe is exactly right. On naturalism there’s no reason to think our moral intuitions would be in accord with moral facts because evolution isn’t about morality… it’s about survival. Honey bees, badgers, ants, lions… these all have wildly different survival strategies and social instincts that humans would find abhorrent, but that’s just because we evolved differently… not because what they do actually IS abhorrent. In other words, if you believe that you have accurate moral intuitions, you shouldn’t be a naturalist.
