The sense of presence in VR is something amazing. And it is what convinces me that sooner or later, VR will succeed. VR is now in one of its down moments. That's why, in these harsh days, I wanted to get back to feeling what made me fall in love with this technology: presence and immersion. I took some very good-looking PCVR experiences, like Half-Life: Alyx, or AirCar, and tried them at the maximum resolution possible on my Dell Pro Max T2 Tower, featuring an #NVIDIA RTX 6000 graphics card. Until a few months ago, I was using my old laptop, which started to show throttling issues, so I was used to lowering the render resolution, while this time, I was moving the slider up and up. The results have been astonishing: even a demo like AirCar made me in awe again, and Half-Life: Alyx was as immersive as I have ever tried it. As much as I love standalone VR, because I think it helped a lot in democratizing the technology, the WOW sensation that you can try on PCVR today is still unbeatable. Probably a good compromise between the two can be cloud rendering, but we still have to wait for it to become a reality. The sense of being somewhere else is a wonderful sensation, and everyone I demoed VR to all these years has been amazed by it, too. And every day, something makes me feel "there" (like today), I remember why I love this technology and why one day it will have a higher adoption. Sure, there are a lot of problems to solve, but I'm convinced one day it will happen. When? Experiments in progress. The one on the right has been learning for ~3 hours, the one in the middle for ~1 hour, and the one on the left just started a few minutes ago. The initial motivation for making the physical Atari was just to commit ourselves to a subset of algorithms that can make progress in this setup. This commitment rules out algorithms that require billions of samples to learn (or worse, require multiple environments running in parallel). Atari games are simple enough that we should be able to show learning on them in a short amount of time with no prior knowledge. Since then, I've realized that this setup is also a good way to compare different paradigms in robotics in a principled way. These paradigms are sim2real, learning from tele-operated data, and learning directly on the robots. So far, I have observed that getting sim2real to work reliably is hard. It requires tweaks that don't scale. Policies that can play perfectly in simulation fall apart because of latencies and the messiness of the real world. These aspects could be modeled to improve the simulation, but not without sinking significant human engineering hours. I have higher hopes for learning from tele-operated data, but that requires a human to learn the task first. These experiments are on my to-do list. I have to learn to play some of the games well through the robot. I’m half-decent at playing Pong and Ms Pacman now. Learning directly on robots is looking like the most promising approach. This approach takes away pesky distribution shifts and makes it possible to have algorithms that continually improve with more data and time without any human intervention. It feels great to let experiments run overnight and wake up to find improved policies. With learning on robots, I should, in principle, be able to go on a long vacation and come back to find better policies for complex tasks beyond Atari games. Whether that is possible with current learning algorithms is a different question.

Since timezones and such... I'm gonna say it now HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! And now, here's a video and a wall of text... ⬇️ Thanks to ALL OF YOU... It's been one of the best years in my life, not only I acomplished a lot of dreams, but also met wonderful people. I cannot believe how far I got, but that wouldn't have been possible without all your support... Went to Japan and even saw the snow for the first time in my life at the same time while visiting lot of MH places! I went to Gamescom and could both the MH directors and part of the community Went to Japan a SECOND time but invited for a Monster Hunter game, and got to met another MH director! I went from 2k followers to almost 7k followers, which for me, it's AMAZING and cannot thank you all enough, seriously Whenever I felt down, I just had to go an read all your replies, your DM's, the amount of love and laughs you all gave me cannot be quantified, you might underestimate my words but trust me, it helped me so much and I felt so close to a lot of the people The more I think of it, the more happy I am... Monster Hunter is a big part of my life and will always be! Hope you all can keep trusting me and my content, and I cannot imagine 2025 being better but sure hope so! I tried to put as much names on the video as I could, but there's a point one has to stop because otherwise I would end up with 20hours video haha If your name is not there, it's probably that reason alone There's also a possibility the auto-corrector rewrote some name wrong and I didn't notice it, sorry again! Jon Rahm on the LIV format: “Yeah, obviously there’s been a bit of a change. There was a lot more about LIV Golf that was attractive to me, right. Yeah, maybe the format was a set back in the past, but at the same time there’s a lot of positives to it as well. And one of the things that a lot of players kept mentioning is you don’t have a wave weather difference, where you can simply get unlucky and you’re out of contention for that tournament. It’s part of the game, I get it, but it’s something you don’t have to deal with anymore. So that part is a very nice aspect. The team is what really made it for me. Being able to be part of a team, represent a team, play for my teammates, with my teammates and against my teammates, is something that to me that has always been very, very special. When you get a victory to share, it’s always better to have a team to share it with. So it’s what was the most attractive part and when we started discussions it gets to a point where even though I’m ambitious, I’m not greedy. So there’s a give and take and the format is something that I can easily overlook, and I’m pretty sure I can learn to enjoy it, I’ll just have to get used to it, but I’m pretty sure I’ll learn to enjoy it. To be honest, the more I started thinking about it, the more I started thinking about my college days that were 3 day tournaments, 54 holes, and everybody warmed up together for the most part. The Text Me Back script is finished! 🥳🎉 This is probably the biggest achievement of my life. I have been through so much over the past year, and especially the last three months haven't been easy. But I kept pushing through even when it hurt because when you do, you make sure that one day it'll get easier. I'm so proud of this script. I've been writing novels and screenplays since I was a young teen, on and off, some years more off than on, but I've always kinda felt that my execution didn't live up to my ambitions. But this time, it's everything I wanted it to be and more. In fact, I'll say that it's better than I ever thought it could be. Of course, that's my extremely biased opinion, but I hope that you'll enjoy it just as much as I've enjoyed writing it. Well, that depends on the execution of the actual gameplay too, but I'm confident. I always say that if somebody else can do something, so can I. So, since the first Life is Strange is pretty close to what I want to do gameplay-wise, it's already been done. There's proof it's possible, and so it will be possible for me too. Now, I'll spend the next few weeks polishing the final episode. There are still some things I'm not fully satisfied with. Episode 5 is still a first draft. (I'll also share the final word count at that time. I'm a sucker for word counts.) So, after a couple of weeks, I'll finally start really getting into making the demo, and hopefully, this page will get more interesting as I can start to show things. Don't expect the world right away, but it'll get more and more exciting as we go. I promise. Thanks to all of you for sticking with me through this long writing process! There's so much focus on "how can AI do my work for me?" I think the more important question is "what work can I now do with AI that I would have never attempted before?" Earlier this year I wrote freestiler, a vector tiling engine for R and Python, with the help of Claude and Codex. I knew what the ideal engine looked like and how it would work at a high level. I didn't know how to put it together, and I don't know Rust, the language I wanted under the hood. Previously I would never have attempted this project as the ROI wasn't there. It would have taken me a year or more to learn the internals of a vector tiling engine and enough Rust to implement one. With Opus-level models, I could take it on. freestiler now powers all my vector tiling pipelines, including the map below rendering 143 million jobs from LODES, and it has 114 GitHub stars. Building this way has required a different set of skills. I don't review the code line by line. I set up adversarial agents to do that and write the test suites. What I review is the architecture, the behavior, and the results. Agent teams surface findings and explain their reasoning; I evaluate and critique. My job isn't to stress over code formatting, but instead to focus on questions like whether the engine is designed right, whether the output is correct, and if the UX makes sense. This means that I haven't "replaced my work." I've taken on entirely new work, with the help of agents, that I would have never done otherwise. It has taken some getting used to shipping code I haven't personally typed. In the old way of working, I built understanding through writing that code. Now I build understanding through managing the project - writing a spec, reviewing structure, evaluating UX. And that's helped me think a whole lot bigger in terms of what I can now do.
