Plyometrics can help all athletes! In this video you’ll see drop jumps, depth jumps, and a depth bound. While these are all slightly different, they are plyometric drills that we use to develop reactive abilities and improve power output.

Running is all about repeated collisions with the ground. We need the strength, reactive ability, and resilience to maximize and tolerate these impacts. In the study, "Effects of plyometric training on the performance of 5-km road runners,” they found:

⁃3 Groups were split and did the same running per week (3x at 5k, 8k, 12k) ⁃One group only ran, one group ran and did squat jumps, one group ran and did drop jumps.

⁃In the post-study 5k, the only running group improved by 4.75 seconds, run + squat jump improved 140.5 seconds, and run + drop jump group improved 170.6 seconds.

Plyometrics are a powerful training tool, but you need to know how to introduce and progress them. In all of my online programs you’ll see how I progress plyometrics, the volume I use, and how to blend them with your sprints or lifts.
