This is the recent hotfire test of Astra's most powerful Rocket 4 first stage engine. The quick green flash comes from a special compound called triethylborane (TEB). It's pyrophoric - meaning it spontaneously ignites the moment it touches air. That super-hot green flame then lights the main propellants: kerosene and liquid oxygen. Once ignited, the engine unleashes a roaring orange plume and huge clouds of smoke. RS-25 engines powering the NASA_SLS (Space Launch System) rocket use liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen as propellants – the same elements that combine to create water (H2O). For an RS-25 engine test, liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen are mixed in the engine combustion chamber and ignited, which results in extremely high-temperature exhaust (up to 6,000 degrees F) exiting the nozzle into the flame deflector at a very high rate and pressure. Hundreds of thousands of gallons of water also are flowing into the flame deflector to cool the exhaust and protect the deflector. When the hot exhaust mixes with the water, it creates steam that rises into the atmosphere, forming a cloud that subsequently cools. Depending on the temperature and humidity at the time of the test, this cloud of steam may condense into water and fall in a very limited and localized area. The steam released during a test is water and does not pollute the atmosphere.

Pure Paddle Power 🚢 Look at Waverley’s magnificent triple expansion steam engine power on at 52rpm last night. After being delayed in Portsmouth due to many shipping movements Waverley’s speed was increased to make up a little of the lost time. Her engineers captured her steam engine at an increased speed. Waverley’s main engine normally operates at 42rpm. Waverley’s engine, number 520, was built in Greenock in 1946 and installed in the ship in early 1947 before her maiden voyage on Monday 16th June 1947. The engine is open to view for passengers and continues to impress young and old as it drives the ship’s massive feathering paddle wheels.
