ArianeGroup and the European Space Agency (ESA) have signed a new contract under the Future Launchers Preparatory Programme to continue the development of the GRETA rocket engine. 🚀 The agreement follows a successful hot-fire campaign completed in 2025 in Germany. The German contribution to the development of GRETA is coordinated by Deutsche Raumfahrtagentur. GRETA explores hydrogen peroxide and ethanol as alternatives to traditional hypergolic propellants, introducing new ignition and combustion challenges while improving sustainability and handling safety. 🔥 The campaign delivered critical data on combustion performance and cooling behaviour. We fired a really cool rocket engine - and broke some records while we were at it. 🔥This Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine produced more than 4,000 pounds of thrust, and included a 300-second continuous burn, which is believed to have set the record for longest duration hot firing of an RDRE engine to date.
