Listen to my interview with Dr. Peter Attia:

@PeterAttiaMD Still so torn on sauna data. The most popular way people access sauna is via the gym so there’s a giant confounder of exercise and people who go to a gym are generally healthier. You can try and control for that but without RCTs it’s so hard to trust the data is reliable

@PeterAttiaMD I’d be fascinated to hear @PeterAttiaMD’s point of view on infrared sauna vs conventional sauna. Does one offer better health benefits than the other?

Great interview! Research has shown many times over that heat increases of 3-4 degrees C trigger mitochondrial replication. Cells have "heat sensors" that detect the temperature rise and replicate mitochondria. So it makes sense that Sauna would trigger mitochondrial replication in your skin and surface muscles. I suspect that strong sunlight (infrared) does the same. (Thus the people who use Infrared LEDs to improve their skin tone.) In more Southern countries, they get that kind of sun exposure a lot. But in Finland and other pro-sauna countries, they don't get that kind of sun for half the year. So in nordic countries, I think Sauna was evolved not just as a just a luxury, I think it's almost a mandatory health tool.

@hubermanlab @PeterAttiaMD Appreciate nothing more than a person who's open minded enough to shift entrenched views when confronted with quality data and evidence. Respect.

Great information and very well articulated. The physical benefits of sauna are clear. Now is there a way to gauge the mental health benefit of sauna. I always say that you will "FEEL" different mentally after a sauna session than when you first stepped in. Problems get smaller, stress melts away. I believe that sauna has a huge therapeutic benefit to mental health.

@PeterAttiaMD The Peter Attia episode was great. Are you based around Lisbon now, Tim? I saw you once at my gym (but didn't feel like interrupting your workout to tell you I'm a huge fan) :)

We build saunas at Cabin neighborhoods for all the great health benefits that y'all mention here, but also because of the incredible conversations that happen when thoughtful people gather at the end of the day to clear their minds and bodies. 🧘‍♀️💨😅

@PeterAttiaMD More of this please! I love seeing how these top performers change their perspectives based on data.
