I wish Boeing would design an all-new narrow body. The current 737 fuselage was designed back when travelers were, ah, much skinnier. The shoulder room in the 737 is cramped compared to the A32X aircraft

NEW UPDATE: The Federal Aviation Administration has approved Boeing to proceed with TIA Phase 4B certification testing for the 777X, unlocking the largest remaining portion of flight test work needed for type certification. According to Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stephanie Pope, the authorization enables expanded testing in avionics, stability and control, and human factors—key final areas before certification. Pope noted this is the last major TIA phase, though not yet complete, with the FAA still requiring extensive additional test points before type certification is issued. The 777-9 campaign, now years behind schedule, has been slowed by multiple technical issues and heightened FAA scrutiny following the 737 MAX crisis, with certification now targeted for next year at the earliest.

Boeing’s long-delayed 777X faces another setback — first delivery now pushed to 2027, with a $5 billion charge due to delays. Initially promised for 2020, the jet is now 6 years late, and FAA certification is taking longer than expected. CEO Kelly Ortberg said: “While we are disappointed in the 777X schedule delay, the airplane continues to perform well in flight testing, and we remain focused on the work ahead to complete our development programs and stabilize our operations to restore trust.”

First flight! ✈️ The first 777-9 airplane for Lufthansa flew ahead of certification testing. The airline is one of the 777X launch customers. Boeing pilots Capt. Ted Grady and Capt. Jake Miller flew a three-hour, 27-minute profile over Washington and Oregon, completing a standard flight designed to test the airplane’s systems and structures.
